Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They almost look like springs for extra leverage, but that can't be it...

Anyone got a clue?

Link to the Gore RideOn website. Having a look at it now. See if it's useful.

With the new GORE Professional shifters cable and housing, the cable is contained within a thin sleeve, surrounded by normal housing. The only place where this sleeve is not present is right where the cable inserts into the derailleurs. Thus, the accordion tubing to cover the cable over this portion. The whole idea, IIRC, is to protect the cable from moisture and corrosives.
I recently installed this cable system on a bike. It is a really friction free, simple to install and sophisticated system. A bit pricey IMHO.

Yeah, we're talking about €50 here for just shifter cables...

But, is it really smoother shifting than regular Shimano SIS cables?

Ok, so I guess they are Grub Protectors. Makes sense where it is installed on the RD, none at all on the FD.

I get why they're at the FD as well. When I take a look at my bike after a week, especially during the current season, I would love to have grub protectors on my FD cable. But on the other hand, the grub protector seems to be positioned too high to actually have any effect.

*waking up* Wait... when you have external cable routing, these grub protectors are utterly useless. They're only useful when they're properly positioned and when you have internal cable routing. Looks like the RadioShack mechanics are failing on that...

Silly gimmick,

Been around before, but it was at least limited to MTB last time.

Right, it would make sense if the Grub was right at the bottom bracket where the cable emerges but this just doesn't seem right.
