Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rim advice

I recently cracked my rear rim...the wheels are Chris King hubs and Zipp 530 aero rims which I bought over a decade ago when I was pretty hardcore into riding. Am looking to replace the rims with something more conventional (I still ride about 150-200 miles a week, but am not racing regularly...although I will on occasion)...

I want to keep the CK hubs, and my first inclination was to get some Mavic Open Pro Ceramics; however, the front hub is an 18-spoke hub (rear is 28-spoke), and I'm pretty sure the OPs don't come with an 18 spoke configuration.

Anyone have any suggestions for a rim that would be good for me? Would also prefer to stay with an aluminum rim (not carbon), but if a good carbon option is out there, I'd like to hear about it. Fwiw, I'm about 190lbs...the bike is a Spectrum Titanium with Kestrel carbon fork....

I believe Kinlin XR-300 rims or IRD Cadence Aero rims come in 18 hole drilling. Strong and light, too (as far as aluminum rims go).

Thanks for the suggestions...will look into those. Have also found the Velocity Fusion or Aerohead (although some have told me I'm too heavy for the Aerohead). Any thoughts on those?

The slightly deeper rims make for much stronger wheels. There's no way I'd lace a low profile rim to an 18h hub, not for anything other than uphill time trials anyhow.

I would recommend a Kinlin XR-300.

The Fusion is a little stronger but heavier. I've built wheels for tandems with them. I would not recommend an 18 spoke Aerohead for anyone over 120 lb.

fwiw...I decided to go with the Velocity Fusion. Felt that the added strength over the Kinlin would be a better choice given the 18-spoke requirement. Will get the wheel probably next Wednesday....

A quick update...got the wheels and am very happy with the results. Much lighter than my previous wheels, and overall the bike feels a *lot* more responsive than it did with the Zipps. Can definitely feel a bit more road chatter, which was to be expected. Will put them thru more paces and report back if my thoughts change on them...

You could've used a 36h rim and treated the spares as 'lightening holes' : p
