Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's your shortest training ride?

I won't even put my bike shoes on for an outdoor ride of under 90 minutes. Not worth it for all the prep.

Although I'm totally ok with trainer rides of 30-40 minutes.

1:20 hours/27miles. But 45 minutes/19 miles of that is at 23 to 25mph average and it's all on a TT bike. Acceptable ride length is inversely proportional to intensity. An hour ride should be pretty much all out.

Except when I am riding just to ride. But then again, I don't really get all decked out for that. If I am riding 10 minutes to get lunch, I won't even put on cycling shoes or helmet.

Well I ride every day... so some rides are short. Riding home from work tends to be about 5-7 minutes... so I would say that's the shortest ride I would do.

Most of my recovery type rides are 1 hour and my workouts tend to be 2-3 hours with warmup, cooldown, intervals, and rest periods.

The shortest ride I'll do this time of year is much shorter than when frostbite isn't an issue. Lately I've been doing a little route that is around 30k.

It seems to take me a good 20 minutes to get out the door in the winter (especially if I'm going for a long ride), although some of that time is spent looking for various articles of clothing I left laying around the house.

During this time of year, my bike rides after school tend to be an hour to an hour and a half long.
I bike from 4-5:30ish. Usually I rack in 15-25 depending on the amount/intensity of the hills tomorrow.

Come Daylight Savings time, it stretches to about 2.5-3 hours, which will be my shortest throughout the DST period, and i'd get about 35-50 Miles.

I thought this was going to be an "I double flatted at the end of the driveway and said 'Screw it'" thread...

I don't get decked out for anything under an hour, though sometimes I just wear running pants and toodle around for a half-hour/45 minutes of recovery.

In the Winter, I try to get at least two hours in, given how much time I invest in running around finding all the layers, getting dressed and cleaning the bike upon return.

Back in September, when I was getting into cycling again, it was 6 km. Now it's usually at least an hour.

well OP said he wouldn't put on bike shoes.... I can't imagine much prep to just put on bike shoes and ride. I'll ride my bike in regular clothes sometimes for just a casual ride, and I do it every day riding home. The OP lives in socal about an hour south/east of me, he doesn't get weather as an excuse.

Weather's an excuse - although it's mainly because I can't ride anytime between 9AM-dark this season, so it's 6:30AM or not. At that time, it's still 40-50F - chilly enough to require full longs.

I've timed myself - I definitely need at least 15 minutes to get out the door without forgetting stuff on my bike. There's simply too much crap that can get misplaced - helmet, shoes, shoe covers, jersey, bibs, leg warmers, arm warmers, gloves, bottles, GPS/HRM, flat kit, sunglasses. And then you have to check tire pressure, deal with unexpected mechanicals, etc. And I don't dilly dally - I'm all business and very organized with my gear. It's just a lot of it.

Then you get home and have to clean it or put it all back in order....

I'm serious when I won't even get my bike gear on for outdoor rides < 90 minutes. I'm sufficiently time crunched by work that I'd rather just go to my local gym where I can run, swim and/or bike without getting all that stuff together if I'm doing < 60 minutes of bike work.

Also talking training rides here. Short errands & commutes don't count. I've got a 3 mile bike commute to work on my beater bike and I wear work clothes on that one and am out the door in 30 seconds.

I just leave most of my stuff (bicycle, waterbottles, helmet, gloves, handlebar bag, jackets, and sometimes shoes) in the van. All I have to do is to get into my cycling gear, braid my hair, get in the van and go.

And I'll do that for rides as short as 30-45 minutes.

15-30 min on trainer or rollers; normal is 1+ hour. Shortest possible ride to loosen legs for a race the next day.

30-45 min on road; normal is 1+ hour. Usually darkness and schedule limited. I have lights, but lights don't help with prior commitment stuff.

i often ride my single speed commuting to work or just tooling around on the weekend for rides well under 30-40 minutes.

anything over 40 minutes i'll put on bike specific clothing.
