Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

105 -> 6700 ultegra

i suspect i already know the answer, but just wanted to ask in case i have missed something.

one of my bikes is running 10-sp 105 now (with an ultegra rd). i'd like to sway just the shifters to ultegra 6700. i really like the new hood design and the hidden cables.

i think new shifters come with a new cable set. is there anything else i need to worry about?

I'm not sure the pull ratio on the new Shimano hidden cable is compatible with old 10 speed.

should that matter though, as long as the cassette spacing is the same, the shifters can pull whatever they need to right???

maybe i am missing something...

Spacing may be the same, but the derailer is different.

Try using a SRAM RD with a Shimano shifter. The spacing is the same, but the SRAM RD travels that space with a different amount of cable pull than does its Shimano counterpart.

Another thing I HATE about the new Shimano 10 speed; the lack of backwards compatibility. That, and those 10 speed levers aren't compatible with Shimano's MTB rear derailers now, either. I run a MTB RD on my cross bike for the wide range cassette. Looks like the extra expensive SRAM XX RD is in my future should my current components ever go tango uniform.

Its all a conspiricy.
I built up an old Surly Pacer steel frame this weeked with spare parts, Tiagra triple shifters, ultegra double crankset, dura ace FD, DA RD, older 9 speed tiagra cassette...all of several different ages. Worst compatibility ever...After about 6 beers before I knew it I was cannibalizing my crit bike for parts to make the new build work, and now have a CAAD9 needing a new cassette and derailleurs (had just got new ultegra cranks and shifters for it on Friday).

I think the shift increments are the same on 6700, so they are compatible (or so I've been told). I believe there is a difference in the brake pull where the 6700 levers are designed for the 6700 brakes. It will still work with old vs. new, but not at the designed effort curve (sort of hard to think of brakes having a 'gear' ratio, but that's the idea).

Are there not compatibility between various Campy groups due to age/series as well? I don't run Campy, so I couldn't say for certain, but I seem to recall there was.

I'm not here to defend any manufacturer, but it seems that this isn't confined to just one.

I switched to SRAM because of Shimano and their compatibility crap.

The pull ratio was changed effecting 7900. IIRC Ultegra is still backwards and forwards compatible.

There should be no problem with that build as long as the DA stuff was 9+ speed.
