Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some advice needed- floor pump leaking

I have used this Wrench Force pump (dual head- Presta and Schrader) for several years but mainly for lower pressure tires. I have had no problems and it is pretty accurate. So I started roadbiking and using it on higher-pressure tires. Recently, it started to leak and the PSI needle on the guage keeps dropping after each pump.

So I started looking at new pumps and it seems like there are so many bad reviews on every pump. I don't mind spending the money to buy a good one but I want something that will last. I just picked up a Nashbar red it is leaks while being brand new so I would like some advice on what to buy next.

What I have read:

Park Mechanic- overpriced rubbish seems to be the consensus
Zefal Husky/SKS Kompressor- many good reviews but some bad about the chuck leaking/breaking
Blackburn Air Tower HP- some good and some terrible reviews about leakage
Silca- the old ones were solid but the new ones are much lower quality
Specialized Air Tool Pro- Undecided- a few reviews evenly split good and bad
Joe Blow Pro- reviews were actually not too bad

I desperately need a floor pump that works reliably.

I would get this pump, it is fast any easy to use. For $38.00 you can't go wrong.

i have the joe blow pro, and it works fantastically. i also have a lezyne, and IMO they are one of the best made products out there right now (that includes everything they make) check them out for a pump you can have for life.

I bought a nashbar orange pump a few years back and it has held up well. it was cheap too, i think maybe 25 or 30 bucks at the time on sale.

Where's it leaking ? You may just needs a few drops of 10w-30 in the barrel to make a seal with the plunger.

I bought a Giant. It has 1 head that handles both types of valve. So far so good.

Avoid the Joe Blow "Max". It doesn't handle high psi

Thanks for the advice. I believe it is leaking from the chuck itself but I'll check it again to be sure. I did look at the Nashbar Orange too- it is probably the best one in their own line. If I cannot fix the silly thing (I think the dual heads are a bit weaker and leak-prone) I'll get a nice new one. I'll also look at the Lezyne and Joe Blow Pro.

Lezyne Classic Steel Floor Pump has been very good for me. I bought it from ProBikeKit. I especially like the thread-on chuck, as it does not bend or mess-up my presta valve pins.

+1 for the Lezyne Classic Floor Drive... The thread-on chuck is awesome, and if it ever does spring a leak due to wearing down the rubber seal on the chuck, you can replace that part easily it seems... Get the one with the thread-on chuck. I've seen online there is a Lezyne floor pump with the flip-tight chuck, so that one I would avoid.

Sometimes pumps leak at a threaded cap near the bottom, where the hose exits. Check to see that you don't have a loose part on the pump.

I got this pump, at a nearby PerformanceBike store:

https://www.performancebike.com/bikes..._20000_1504502

But I think I paid substantially less for it than the link's sale price of $45. This was in early January, but if I remember right, it was either $34.99 or maybe $39.99 in the store, plus there was a "today only - take an additional x% off" deal going on, so I think it might have been below $30 in the end.

I couldn't decide which of the four or five floor pumps to get, but decided on this Hurricane model as it claims to be able to pump up to 260 psi, whereas the other models typically max. out at 160 psi. I know that I'll never need even 160 psi, but my thinking was that a pump that could handle 260 psi would perhaps be more robust at more normal pressures.

In use, it seems totally leak-free - between pumps the pressure is rock-steady. Also, there is very little effort involved (I am only pumping my tires to 120 psi).

The head fits both Presta and Schrader without needing any switching or adapting (single hole that fits both), although I have not used my pump on a Schrader valve yet. There is also a bleed-off button, which sometimes can come in handy. The only negatives I can think of are that the gauge is on the floor, instead of up high, which makes it a little harder to read (I seem to think there is a settable "target pressure" marker.) Plus, since the gauge reads so high, the scale is a little more compressed than with other pumps.

The guy at the counter at PB tried to tell me that Hurricane was sort of a house-brand for PB, and that this pump was actually made by Blackburn for them. Don't know if that is true or not, since I haven't seen any Blackburn models that look the same, nor any that go up to 260 psi.

I much prefer my Super Pista pump over the Joe Blow Pro even though the gauge is at the bottom.

I have one of the Joe blow pumps and have recently developed a leak in the head unit.. seems to be coming from under the lever. anyone have this issue? i wonder if it got dropped and something cracked inside. I'd prefer not to have to replace the whole hose assembly. anyone hate their joe blow pump enough to send me a head piece

You can replace just the chuck or the chuck and hose assembly. Cheaper than a new pump.

I've had a plastic Nashbar pump for about 15 years and its been great. I could of spent more, but don't see why I needed to.
