Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Campagnolo 11 speed front derailleur with a 10 speed setup and compact crank?

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but I couldn't find it after searching.

Can I use the new Campagnolo Record 11-speed front derailleur with a Campagnolo 10-speed setup? I have an ultra-torque 34x50 compact crankset and a short-cage rear derailleur.

Thanks.

Probably, however the cage is narrower than on the 10 sp version (the 11sp chain is narrower) and you'll find yourself having to trim a LOT. You'd be much better to get a 10sp front der. You can then use that just fine with the 11sp group.

Thanks, I'll likely stick with the 10-speed version.

either 10 or 11 will work fine. The manufacturers, bless their hearts, have not yet figured out a way to screw up the front derailleur such that it'll only work for a specific application.

I've tried 11-speed front with a 10-speed setup, btw.

Some users can't even get the 11 speed FD adjusted to work properly with their 11 speed chain - but of course it's never their lack of mechanical ability. Something must be wrong with the FD.

I've got three 11 speed bikes. One uses an '08 Chorus 10 FD and it works fine. I've had no problem with either the 10 or 11 speed FDs. The 11S is narrower, so you might need a trim click 1-cog sooner.

I'm even experimanting with a 10 speed chain on one bike (the one with the 10 speed FD). So far, it's working fine, but I'm not recommending this instead of an 11 speed chain.

10 speed RDs will also work, but they work best with a little mod to the cable clamp bolt.

Hey Dave - Is there a problem across all Campy 11 speed groups with the FD??

so what is the mod? I'd like to convert a few 10 speed setups...

he said some users have a problem. there is nothing wrong with the FD's themselves. i have a flawlessly operating and set-up 11-sp drivetrain. (chorus)

Well heck, then I might just go with the 11 speed, depending on what's around at what price. I don't mind trimming, as long as it's an option.

BTW, how did you ever learn all these intricacies about Campy? (I'm basing my question on other posts -- including from me -- that you've answered.)
