Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Couldn't take it anymore. I ordered some e-motion rollers.

Torrential downpours today, my only day of the week to ride outside. 2 hours on my POS BB Trackstand Ultra just about made me insane.

I've never used rollers before so I hope I can adapt to them. I normally spend at least 50% of my time on the trainer (soon to be rollers) so I'd better like them.

As for my trainer, I will NEVER EVER buy any BB trainer EVER again. All models are crapola! PSA stay far away from BB trainers. Crap, crap and more crap.

e-motion rollers? Don't those cost like 700 bucks?

I am ok with my $120 Performance Travel Trac rollers.

Give us a report on how you like them once you have ridden them.

You're going to love them, they are amazing. I can't imagine riding indoors on regular rollers or a trainer after getting e-motions.

they definitely make it easier to put in the hours indoors.

Good choice. As far as rollers go, it's either the $120 performance special or the e-motion. anything in between is waste of $

Congratulations. I got mine in October and love them. I had high expectations based on a lot of good reviews, but my expectations were exceeded. I'll bet they don't have many people return these things after the trial period.

The engineering and quality of the components are at a level you just don't see in many products these days. They could have delivered the same basic concept at much lower cost and probably sell more units, but I'm glad they didn't go the cheap route. The e-motions are a joy to ride and I'm sure they will outlast me. A bit of a luxury item yes, but I consider them a bargain at $700.

The only negative thing I could say about the e-motions is that you can't switch the resistance level without getting off the bike. That can be tough on intervals at higher resistance because wheel speed gets pretty slow while resting between intervals. It would be nice to have a remote control or something, but I'm not sure how they would do that.

It seems to me a little odd to go to rollers in March. The weather is warming. Torrential rain, that's doable on a bike outdoors. It's not snow and/or ice. But, my wife loves spin classes indoors. If you don't want to be outside with GTX/eVent shell and pants, and take your glasses off, that's cool. Spin on your rollers inside.

Even if the weather is good, I don't like to ride outside at night so when my work schedule prevents me from riding in the day time I ride rollers instead. It's no replacement but it's better than nothing.

It's your choice, but you can get a MagicShine 900 Lumen light for $85 for night riding which is a lot less than the e-motions.

Oh, I'm not the one buying the e-motion rollers.

As for night riding, the idea intrigues me from time to time but I just can't get myself to believe that lights are enough to keep me from getting killed. I see cyclists out at night and their lights just don't look sufficient, especially the rear ones. Moreover, I just can't believe I'd be able to see the road and all it's irregularities as well. There is a club around here that rides at night. More power to them but I can't get into it.

the light he suggests WILL get you noticed. It's not like that blinky led you miss when driving home. Seriously.

Also, there's nothing like shutting OFF the light and climbing in the moonlight (with the caveat that the road isn't heavily trafficked and you can see and hear enough to know when a car is coming -- then turn on the light)

Be sure to have a video taken of your "First time on rollers", and post it on YouTube. I did that when I got my e-Motion rollers 2 years ago, and I checked the other day and it had 12,000 views. These videos can be pretty funny.

I've found I haven't used my e-Motions as much as I thought, mainly because the weather in CA so as to rarely preclude riding outside, and I've got good lights as well. But the e-Motions are great, what with the motion it allows, you can get out of the saddle, and the all-important roller blade wheels.

Have something like a stool nearby to step up on, and start out like in a doorway, or near something you can grab onto.

i had the same feeling a few months ago. couldn't wait anymore, so i got a set of rollers via craigslist for $80. not the best, i'm sure, but they work.

it took me about a week's worth of riding to get used to them. i'd say DONT start with a stool or wall. the key to riding without falling is:
(1) PEDAL FASTER when you feel like you're going to fall
(2) LOOK FORWARD, not down.
and you'll stay up.

also, i have to recommend the 1UP trainer. it's S I L E N T.

Hopefully I won't kill myself. They seem pretty safe as far as rollers go. As for the money, I got most of my money back on the crappy BB trainers and the way I see it I'd have to spend $350 with shipping for a decent fluid trainer or the new 1up or double that for something much better for my training.

As for riding outdoors, I live in Hawaii so it's always "possible" but I workout at 0400 during the week and even with a light I'm not about to ride as fast as I want or need to in the dark.

I have only Saturday or sometimes Sundays for outdoor riding.

And if I need more resistance for the occasional "hill" workout I can still use my trackstand ultra (which uses the previous 1up resistance unit). It has SOOOO much resistance I can barely average 12mph on it even with it set in the least resistance mode. It's really good for standing and mashing though.

The presumpion that everyone can ride outside every day is pretty naive. I live in a very hilly, high traffic area. Soon as I step outside I'm going 35+ mph. The risk is just too high to be worth it. When I lived in a flat residential area it was okay but man... Anyway, don't assume everyone is okay with piddling out at night for a 14 mph cruise down a 5 mile farm road.

^^ This is BF, so presumptuousness abounds.

That being said, of course your point is well taken, and if there are safety issues with riding at night then indoors is reasonable.

However, with good lights and riding in familiar territory, I far prefer outdoor night riding to basement-riding. YMMV.

You will not need more resistance, unless you're Lance. I've hit 850 watts on the first resistance setting on the e-motions.

I have the travel tracs also. I built some e-motion type rollers based on youtube videos and they worked fine, but in short order I felt I was losing the benefits of pure rollers -- I got sloppy once I was allowed to bounce around with the motion setup. I went back to straight rollers and like it better this way, forces me to focus on my position.

ell, that sucks! I thought I was going to get the free shipping emotion advertised on their site, but even though fedex has ground shipping rates to hawaii, they want an extra 95 bucks to ship to me. That takes the price of the rollers to 900 which is beyond my tolerance. 800 was pushing it and I was willong to go for that but the extra 95 I just can't do. Looks like I'll be sufferung on my POS trainer for quite a while longer. I'm bummed!

I have no interest in riding in the dark ever. I'd much rather ride the rollers and watch the wire.

It its however, possible to fall off e-motion rollers

2 examples -

forgetting to unclip as the wheels come to a stop...which i did, thats one way (that could happened on regular rollers as well)

the other way is that i wanted to see how fast i could get my bike computer on the rollers so i got on warmed up and started sprinting....was rocking the bike back and forth, 11-53, banging into the side wheels. I panicked for some reason and went over and almost gave myself and AC separation.
Those were both within my first 4 rides on that thing.

3rd example is riding on slippery ceramic tile floor with no trainer mat underneath. Rocking bike side to side attempting to hammer out of the saddle for the first time caused the rollers to slide right from under me. Was my 2nd time on it. On Christmas day. Scared the sh*t outta my wife. As was mentioned, had I videotaped it, it woulda been a priceless YouTube moment.

A 4th example of falling off E-motions is being distracted during a stabbing scene while watching "Wrong Turn 3" and losing focus.

I've gone over sideways on the e-motions a couple of times, both when trying to stand while pedaling. I'm getting better at it, but sometimes I just can't keep straight enough while standing. Both times I caught myself before hitting the floor. I have a wall on one side, and a chair on the other and a pile of old phone books as a stepping stool.

Man I even suck at the easiest rollers in the world...
