Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

for the guys

Alright, I've got a slightly personal question and hope I don't come across too crudely. Sometimes when I ride, especially when I get down in the drops, the head of my penis seems to retreat like its trying to go back to its un circumsized days or like a frightened turtle. It's not painful, just real uncomfortable and I'm constantly readjusting everything down there. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but I'd appreciate any suggestions. I don't wear cycling shorts but I do wear either athletic boxer briefs or some swim jammers which are just as tight.

I've never had this exact problem, but I've noticed more discomfort "down there" when I've ridden bibs that are a little too tight. Might want to invest in some nice fitting bibs/shorts.

Have you had a good bike fit? Between a new saddle and a bike fit, my issues "down there" are gone. in addition to your issues I also had a numbness issue which is gone. Good luck

You might also want to try one of those saddles that look like a limp d*ck.

Yeah I just had it fit and was hoping that would have fixed the problem, but nope. I'll get some cycling shorts and see how that goes.

Shorts have very little/nothing to do with it. It's your saddle and how you sit on it. I have an older bike with a Selle italia saddle and classic geometry and a newer bike with one of those anatomic cut out saddles. I do the same climb on both bikes and on the old bike I get exactly what you are describing, on the cut out saddle it was never ever a problem. I ride in bike shorts or normal clothes when commuting and so it doesn't change a thing.

I wish that were true for everyone. I, too, experience the turtle, even with "good" cycling shorts.

Hoping I have better luck with saddle adjustment (angle, height).

I've, ahem, had it happen to me. Saddle fore/aft and height, even in small mm measurements can eliminate this effect.
You can also try a cutout saddle.

you're thinking with your weenie too much.

it's probably a seat adjustment thing. play around with it.

The replies to the OP are talking about two or three distinctly different problems.

The turtle effect usually happens when it's chilly. Changing bike fit or saddle won't help you.

The numbness can be sorted out with a decent bike fit.

This same exact thing happened to me the other night. I was riding on my trainer in my bibs, and had to stop a few times to "adjust". I guess I had my saddle pointed up too much. Just a little adjustment to level out my seat, "fixed" the issue.
My wife thought it was funny....

On my ride today I was thinking about starting a thread about this. I even thought of using the same title! LOL. Glad to hear that others have this issue. However, after fiddling with things a bit, unrolling it all and getting comfortable, it seems to cease being a problem for the rest of the ride. Gotta find a nice comfy spot for the ole guy down in the shorts.

You need to wear cycling shorts (and heaven forbid, maybe even a condom when riding... )

before wearing shorts, put your penis inside a toilet paper center cardboard, that way even if it retreats it still points forward. i hope we have this issue "straightened" out now.

Finally, a question to which "HTFU" actually isn't the proper answer.
