Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Our hobby is transportation and sport, it possesses no more nobility or lack of it then the riders bring to it themselves.

For sure. The resistance used bicycle too. You might note also.. The British Scout master was sympathetic to Hitler and Germany.. He likely sent those British scouts to the perfect bicycle retreat in terms of fitness training, being that Germans take their cycling seriously.

A couple years ago I tried to ride through a the road that goes by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. I got turned back at the security gate.

I guess I looked like a spy.

" Riding and camping is touring"

+1

"and is for Freds!"

-1

Roadies dress up in weird clothing, spend gross amounts of money on themselves, brag about their supposed exploits; that's quite a "noble" hobby. ;-)

It's not the hobby that's noble or not - it's the participants, and those that would exploit them.

Yes, here.

Apparently, you need a security pass even to drive by the facilities. I didn't realize it at the time.

Touring is for bicyclists who aren't afraid of getting out of cell phone range and for Freds who are tougher than racer boys

Bet you'd be cryin' and dialin' at the half way point of the Alpowa Summit outside of Clarkston, WA if you had to huck yourself, your bike and all the gear you need to exist on the road for 3 weeks up a 2000ft climb over 12 miles.

On second thought, you wouldn't do it in the first place...you're not tough enough. .

Dork? Hardly.

Now if I had been riding a recumbent with helmet mirrors and other Fredly gear, they would have been justified in calling out the SWAT team after me.

An average 3% grade. Wow.

I'd expect more out of someone from Colorado. That's not even a mountain; it's a hill, tough guy.
