Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Forte Apollo Wheelset - Kinlin?

Has anyone seen/tried the new Forte Apollo wheelset at Performance? I was looking online and if its anything like the Titan it seems like a decent deal. Currently $260 for both front/rear, 1650g, 20/24 spokes, 30mm rims (Kinlin XR-300 perhaps?)

Yeah, KinLin is the only company making 30mm rims...

At that weight I doubt it.

The weight doesn't seem correct Bob? The only reason i'm asking is because the Forte Titan and Neuvation M28 were supposedly the same (I was under the impression Neuvation was also using Kinlin, maybe that was my mistake). Wouldn't 1650g be about right assuming they're using a heavyish hub and cheaper spokes? Even though many have said the Neuvation M28 and Forte Titans were the same, the Forte set had a higher posted weight, for whatever that's worth.

I probably woudn't have cared if it wasn't for the fact the Titans got such good reviews.

My xr-300 wheels are 1550ish, with CX-Rays (though mine are 24/28, not 20/24) and white hubs. 1650 wouldn't seem out of line at all with some heavier spokes and hubs.

The Titans look like a hell of a wheel for the money. Good to hear they got good reviews.

Many have said that the titans are similar to Neuvations M28s, so i'm wondering what these are a clone of.

I've built 20/24 XR-270 with Novatec hubs and Sapim Laser/Race and they were around 1500g. I used the XR-300 with the same hubs and spokes in 24/28 and they were around 1540g.

I guess if you added 80g for hubs and 20g for spokes/nipples it could be right. But then again there are a LOT of rim makes who make cheaper 30mm rims than KinLin so if the price is that good I don't know.

At the end of the day if the wheels are getting good reviews then go for it regardless of who you think the vendors are.
