Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My first race coming up in early April is the SC state crit. It's quite hard for me to find races that aren't more than a 2 hours drive away and there aren't any junior teams within 150 miles from where i live which really stinks. There are a few retired domestic pro riders in the local club that support me and give me advice though which is pretty sweet.

mzeffex my mom also won't let me go riding after dark, though the days are getting longer pretty soon so that won't become much of a problem.

This summer I am staying in Germany with friends to brush up on my German and hopefully be able to do a lot of good climbing. The local elevation is about 12 ft. and the closest resemblance to hills are a few small bridges so i am really looking forward to this summer.
That's great! I've only traveled to parts of Asia I want to go the European countries. Hope your having fun there! And hope you're not drinking...heard the legal drinking age was 16 =0

I plan to race collegiate, but if there's one thing I've learned from racing so far its that none of us are anything special. UCI/US pro is a pipe dream at best.

It's a 2009 Trek 2.1 i got on April 4, 2009. Upgraded Wheels temporarily to Forte Titans just to relieve a good 2.5-3 lbs off my bike, equipped with Vredstein Fortezza tires. The rest of the components are stock (Tiagra/105)

Heck I am fourteen I cant afford much of a bike but i love to ride and am very serious about it. I ride with a lot of people and think that i have the perfect biker body and now i just happend to be into this new stuff. Riding is just the thing for me because I have struggled with a bit of depression and bad accidents and biking just makes you feel great. So yah only fourteen years old.

I'm a fourteen year old freshman and I am just getting into racing this season. A club opened in my school and I thought I'd give it a try, since for the past few years I had been riding my Specialized for fun. This week on my new bike, I've ridden every day after school (with the club) and have put on 115 miles since Saturday. I was WICKED surprised when my coach said I should start in A class road racing. I'm thinking I might want to start in a B race for my first one, no? I'm just worrying about my bike handling and all that jazz. Any ideas? (sorry for possible thread jacking)

EDIT: My Kestrel RT 800

Since this picture right after assembly, I have put on an Elite cage, DA pedals, and a Sigma computer with cadence. It has full Dura Ace, and weighs on the lighter side of 17 pounds.

Thread Jacking? Cmon now this is everyone's thread! That's pretty amazing, if you're really close to your coach and he knows you a lot then go for it, but if not do whatever you believe you can do, no matter what choice you take you will excel as long as you train consistently and effectively and ultimately have fun.

Edit: You've got a pretty good looking bike! I envy you for having Dura-Ace!

Great Bike! My next bike is going to be a BMC unless Trek, Specialized, or any other company can impress me with a mid-priced bike around less than $3000. I love BMC's though, i don't see many around my area =(

Yeah I'm 18. Not for much longer though.

No racing yet, I'm just riding around like a doofus on my heavy BSO.

I'm a freshman in college, and I try to get one ride in per day.

Trying to lose a lot more weight before buying/building a better bike and starting some racing.

And that's about it for me...

i really had my eye on the road racer since 2008, than finally got the funds to get it. now BMC comes out with the new team machine and i am stunned again. the seat stays are like the thickness of a pencil. they really are on with their bikes. they are a rarity, but they're a great ride.

I'm 17 and about to buy my first road bike in 3 weeks (two more paychecks.) Going for the CAAD9-5. I've put in 42 hours this last week at my minimum wage local pizza place, and then school on top of that. I want this bike BAD. Now I'm stressed about scholarships, stressed about grades, working too much and look like this , but next week is spring break at which point I'm telling the boss it's two days a week from here on out, getting my bike, taking it easy, and looking like all of these on some long long back roads...

Here's mine:

Weighs around 17 or just a tad under depending on the scale. I'm considering racing but the parents are tough cookies to convince.

I'll get a picture when I have the bike, but essentially my current road build is going something like this:

SOMA Smoothie Road Race frame
-Full Campagnolo 10 speed (mix of Centaur, Chorus, and Racing T)
-Moots seatpost and stem
-Cinelli Altera bars
-DT R1600 Wheelset

And hopefully to top it off, if anybody has a Selle Italia SLR, and wants a gel flow with a cutout, my butt really prefers the normal ones.

I'm 18 for another month, woohoo. currently going to college in NYC.

started riding when i was 14, i think? i learned probably 1/2 of what i know about bikes from this forum and the other half just from buying tons of used bikes and playing around with them.

side comment:
i was also always too precocious for my own good and i used to get into long winded arguments with people on this forum if they gave me any sort of **** about my age. (there are some beautiful 10 page threads buried in the archives somewhere here.) the fact is, recreational road biking, especially as represented by this forum, is mostly an upper-middle class rich man sport, and unlike, say, basketball, sometimes it's a little harder for young guys to get 'respect' (whatever that means).

this is me:

Wow, all of you have way too much money! Those bikes are crazy! I ride a 63.5 cm 1984 Schwinn Supersport. I'm 16 and soon to be 17, I've been riding for a few years, I don't race just do it for fun with a lot of my friends. Balancing cycling with practicing my Trombone, school, friends, and scouts takes up all my time, I try to ride everyday after school.

I worked in my uncle's shop last summer. After a few incidents, we decided the best way to pay me was to just build up a bike. Employee pricing does rock, though.
