Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin releases team Edge 500/nuvi

https://www.bikeradar.com/road/news/a...and-nvi--25391

While this isn't jawdropping, is something I thought I'd share. The black and white Edge 500 better matches my Tarmac than the original... Interesting also to see that the team Edge 500 comes with the "premium" heart strap, whereas the standard comes with the... well... standard strap.

That would look great with my bike - but of course I've already purchased the original model.

I like the gray CF look on the 2nd one. Where's a good place to buy one? They (original model) are nearly $300.00 at my lbs and I don't think that includes the chest strap.

Nice... I really like the b&w one. Maybe it's time to replace my aging Edge 305; I assume it's compatible with the same cadence sensor? (I think the 705 is.) How is the battery life? $249 isn't too bad for just a head unit.

Figures, I buy the blue (original) one not even a week ago and they come out with a nice black one that would go nicely with my bike....

After having mine (305) come off my bike on a descent and almost lost to a bog somewhere in France, the next cycling computer I get will be neon friggin' orange. The Garmin colors are not bright enough. The Garmin colors 705 is more my speed.

Guys there are 2 versions of the 500. With and without cad/HR. The MSRP for the unit without is $249. The MSRP for the unit with is $349.

Psimet, if I am not mistaken the actual units are identical, just one kit comes with the cadence and HR parts in addition to the head unit.

That's correct. It is just packaged in two different packs. The differences people were quoting in pricing is simply due to the fact that they are looking at different versions.

My understanding is the 500 uses a different mount than the 705.

I take it the mounts aren't interchangeable. I wouldn't mind having a 500 to save a little weight, and look better than the 705, but I'd like to still be able to use the 705 when I wanted mappng.

The mount is indeed different but the 500 mount is awesome. Very easy to put on and take off- o-ring style. No worries.

That said the 500 has only been on my bike a few times. The 500 latest firmware upgrade now has training so really the only feature that isn't on the 500 is the maps. I don't use the maps often.
