Anyone wear "baggies" over their lycra shorts?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If I am on the road bike, that means I am doing roadie stuff and I wear my roadie kit.
On my other bikes, doing non-roadie, touristy, fredelicious, normal stuff, I'll wear regular shorts, knickers or pants. If it's gonna a be a long-assed ride, I may wear a padded liner or even my bibs under, otherwise, wool boxers are just fine.

But you're asking us what to wear over your lycra?

Wear whatever you want. Whichever you choose, there will be one group of people (either the cyclists or the non-cyclists) laughing at you...

I do sometimes wear shorts over my bike shorts, yeah. Also, mtb shorts with pads in them but are still baggy work too! (going to get a pair for a tour coming up)

Can't say I have. No. Never. If I was in a situation where baggies would be more appropriate, I'd get changed out of the bike shorts.

yep but I wear regular lined bike shorts not MTB shorts. in the summer I'll ride just in the shorts and when I walk around I slide on some running shorts I carry. I also carry a hat to put on my sweaty head.

for summer commuting I'll ride in the bike shorts to work but always cover up for he ride home - mostly for the walk through the office. I've heard the snickers and insults and ridicule my boss has suffered when he makes he walk through the office in his kit. I'm not even an athlete like him - so I can imagine the cr*p that would be flying if anyone saw my a*s in bike shorts

Seems you're not getting the question. "Sorry but, I'm just not a lycra wearing fellow"....means on the outside, not under the shorts - hence the question.

I originally started wearing baggies over my bibs and a t-shirt but only because I am a huge lard ass and was very self conscious. I'm still a lard ass, but found that cycling clothing is made for a reason, and that reason being comfort and practicality. My baggies used to catch on my saddle all the time. And I probably looked cyclo-gangsta riding down the road with baggies and a sleeveless shirt.

Since I have gotten into road biking over the past couple of years, I always wear my spandex when I'm out on a ride. It felt a bit awkward at first, but then I got used to it and I really don't care what other people/motorists think. I do bring a lightweight pair of gym shorts if I am going to be getting off the bike to go into any stores or to someone's house, just because.

I've even switched to wearing spandex on my mountain bike rides. I got fed up with my baggies getting caught on my seat (which actually made me crash into a tree on a steep decent once). I may not have as much protection with spandex in a crash, but I'm not one to crash often so I don't worry about it.

I might be completely off but wearing gear that isn't as comfortable for the task at hand seems like it's because you don't want to be seen in lycra.

That is a situation that wouldn't bother me, and I've been in it plenty of times. The number 1 thing to remember is that 99% of the people that laugh or snicker at you will end up going home after eating that sandwich and plopping down in front of a TV and getting fatter. The ones that are fit know that different sports require different clothing which looks silly to the outsider.

I care what people think, if that person matters. If that lardass in the SUV eating the big mac thinks I look silly, should I really care?

I have yet to ride my new bike, I get it Thursday, I do a lot of spinning classes at the gym and I always wear running shorts over the bike shorts. I am a bit of a tub so I dont look too impressive in tight anything. I am working on it though and I think I am going to bite the bullet and buy a jersey and another pair of cycling shorts to use with the new bike

I do, why?

You think she does because she requested I cover my package and I obliged? Is your significant other neurotic? Mine is and she obsess and gets anxiety over the smallest stupidest things...so giving her a small piece of mind that I'm not screwing around on her.

O and since posting that, I've talked to her and have convinced her no one will see anything as long as I am on the bike and not walking around. Since I have to walk around at work, I told her I would wear the shorts while commuting since there are gossip types at the office and gossip all day like a couple of chickens....it is like I work in a chicken coup.

i have one pair of spandex long pants that I'll wear on a day like today when it's raining, otherwise, i havent' invested in any biking spandex yet and if i do I'll almost always wear some sort of regular shorts over them, simply because I like having my wallet, phone, etc on my person and a lot of my riding is recreational where Ill ride somewhere, stop, go eat lunch or go to a store or something like that. If i get to the point where I'm doing straight up long rides for the sake of riding then I'd be more inclined to go just spandex.

I also live in NYC and don't enjoy all the gay men blatently ogling me.

they've got all the sex drive and agression as straight men with none of the respect for the fact that the men they are catcalling are probably not intersted! Obviously it's not all gay men but I've learned in my time here in nyc that apparently gay men think I'm attractive. Yay Me.

take it as a compliment and move on. Living in Miami its a normal part of life and I've learned to laugh about it. Now we know how women feel because they're probably just as interested in us 99% of the time as we are in the gay men.

Learn from what women have done to us...make em buy you stuff then tell em you have a headache.
