Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bicycle races and Universal Sports

It's great to hear that Versus is back on DirecTV, but I would like to ask that all of you who are DirecTV subscribers let DirecTv know that you would like to have Universal Sports be a permanent part of the Choice Package. Last fall they carried Universal in the Choice Package for a couple of weeks, and they showed the Vuelta and the World Championships and reruns of the Giro. this weekend they will have Milan-San Remo. They carry a number of the other so-called "minor sports," including track and field, nordic and alpine skiing, triathlon, etc. It was a wonderful few weeks, but it would be great to have it all of the time and not in a premium package.

I got Dish and Universal Sports is not offered. Fortunately, here in North Texas Universal Sports is broadcast over the air. Check where you live.

I have VERSUS HD and Universal Sports HD and I have had it all year for hockey and for races, not like DirectSuckvy, they take away channels for no reason other than to cut back on the budget. I wouldnt mind a small increase in my bill.

Versus is back on DirecTV.....Sweet! I have been sending Direct TV hate mail to get them to bring Versus back. I was just about to dump them.

When TV stations switched to the digital signal, I though I might have to get cable. instead, a local station started carrying Universal over-the-air on their second channel. Watched World Cup XC Skiing all winter, and Tirreno-Adriatico all last week.

I remember a time when we had to read about the Tour de France in the next morning's newspaper, and only IF they decided to print the stage results that day.

BTW, Todd Gogulski is doing a GREAT job as a broadcaster on Universal.
All they do is take the feed off the satellite and put their voice track on it. Pretty cheap and easy.

USN is a digital sister of your local NBC affiliate. It is available on most cable providers and no satellite providers. Our area has Time Warner Cable and is so bad I have Dish all year and have cable sevice only for the period that the Giro is being telecast. I could not tolerate Time Warner Cable year round.

Yep, I just put a big UHF antenna in the attic and get Usports for free over-air. It's crystal clear.

i honestly am not a fan of direct tv, i have it but im not liking it. Every time a somewhat big storm rolls through i cant watch tv for the length of the storm. I would like to see universal sports back on direct tv because it was way better shows and versus only has a few races.

and you are going to receive it "over the air" WITHOUT all the digital compression that Comcast and others add to conserve bandwidth. I can receive it both ways and when I A/B the HD over the air compared to cable is is very noticeable.

Indeed, it looks perfect. Of course the streaming Internet feed is really good, and yesterday I chose to watch Milan San Remo on that so I could see it live at 1000EST instead of waiting for broadcast at 1500EST. Really, everybody with an Internet connection can just watch the streaming. The quality is good. The British(?) commentary guy on the streaming is better than Todd G on broadcast.

I love USN but I have to say the coverage of Milan-San Remo sucked. We got 1 hour, not the promised 2 hours in the tv guide, and it was only like the last 17Km of a 298Km race? Oh c'mon! Was still a great finish though. Going to be a great season.

Directv has ESPN2. At least my package does. I'm glad Versus is back. I missed the WEC and would have been pissed if I had missed the UFC card tonight. It would have been tough to miss the Tour de France, but since I'll be on a boat in Indonesia during July, I wasn't going to stress about it this year. What kills me is the ridiculous fee Directv is charging for the HD NFL Ticket. I usually have 2-3 TVs going for NFL games and still paying an extra $100.00 a year to watch maybe 1 game more a week in HD is ridiculous. Between the Thursday night games, the Sunday night games, the local network games, and Monday night football, a minimum of 5 of 16 contests a week are already on free HD. Maybe there's 1 more game I want to watch closely. They already charge me for each HD receiver and HD programming. Sigh...guess it will become standard when they start charging us $500.00 more a year to watch games in 3D.
