Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When resting and standing over your bike on a slope, always unclip both feet. Fell right onto the buckle of my shoe, got back up and finished the ride and didn't notice until I got home that my ankle was bruised and swollen. I've been limping the last three days.

Black cables, while cool looking, are not always slipperier because they are coated with teflon. After three days of sticky brakes (after a fresh build), I had to get steel cables and thread them delicately through the installed housing to bring the brakes back to life.

(1) rain forecast doesn't mean that it won't be totally sunny and you'll go home with a massive sunburn

(2) my fiancée actually pushes herself harder when i keep my mouth shut, drop a few feet back and let her just pedal.

Close your mouth on the downhills; all that fluff on my butt does nothing to pad my bicycle seat, and 16 miles on day two is too much. Also, there is immense shame in pushing your bicycle up a hill.

No shame, really. I used to tour and ride a whole, whole lot. For some reason, I forgot that I was a hard core rider. I rediscovered that two years ago and the hills near me (L'Alpine D'Huez) forced me to walk. Not even close to walking those mole hills now. KEEP WORKING (and it will work).

I learned that you should make sure you have enough gas to get to the ride meet up point. Or there will be no ride for you. :-(

Of course not -- nobody is going to hit them from the right, and the traffic they need to merge into is coming from their left. I take it that your posting means that you didn't get hurt.

No I did not, but it was b/c I was watching him knowing he wasn't going to check the crosswalk. Even though everyone in DC knows that pedestrians have the green light as well when you are turning right (I learned this the hard way). If I take time to stop, press the button, and wait, they could at least check the freaking crosswalk, you know? But I used to be that driver cussing people on bikes so now I'm on the other side.

Yeah, which is why I don't ride in crosswalks if I can help it. And, if someone's going to turn right on red and I'm waiting on their right side, I walk behind them instead -- because they're probably not looking for me, but a second driver behind them is looking to their front so that they don't hit the first driver, and they'll definitely see me.

Riding among the traffic on Constitution Ave. or around Tyson's Corner certainly keeps me on my toes, though.. lol

I will remember that, thanks for the advice. In this area you always have to be watching the other guy, even when you are driving. B/c they sure as heck aren't watchng you. I am not quite in DC, I am in NOVA, Fort Belvoir specifically.

Purchase some good shorts, cheap shorts SUCK on long rides. Didnt think it would bother me too much but about 30 miles into a 50 mile ride today things started getting pretty painful down there.

The guy in the Landmark Excavating diesel truck in Hagerstown Maryland does not "share the road". It's all his. I took the lane approaching an intersection to make myself seen, he goes into the left turn lane just to cut me off right before the red light. I came up beside him after he stopped in front of me and returned the favor once he stopped. Needless to say I was enhaling diesel fumes shortly after the light turned green. D-bag

- Agreed, winds suck.
- Mensa meetings let out around 4pm and they all go jogging on the wrong side of the road around blind corners that I also happen to be on.

Leading a group with an allergy stuffed nose through a tree canopy uphill stretch is not good. Mouth breathing a swarm of gnats and the subsequent expelling of them as an instinctive natural reaction still pisses off the rider behind you.

I need to be very assertive about my place in the paceline without hesitation no matter how freakin' tired I am when pulling off the front.

Every now and then someone shows me a kindness and sense of responsibility that I do not think I would have if our roles were reversed.

When I'm hurt I don't run up hills with the greatest of ease - I guess I should have known that but the reality of not being able to climb well was humbling and discouraging - it really sucks to suddenly suck at something that you're used to being pretty decent at.

I'm in Dallas and they're the closest thing to a real climb we've got in this part of Texas...but maybe you've got more mountains there in Florida...
