Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm nearly a roadie

This might be a long post, but bear with me because a lot happened today. I was working on my dad's mtb hoping to get something better out of the mediocre thing. I spent a couple hours on it and got some good work done. I weighed it plus me and subtracted my weight to find out that it weighs 37 lbs!

So I head over to my friend's house in the afternoon to take a closer look at the bike. Everything looks fine, and it seems to fit well. I had the cash in my pocket, so after some more casual conversation, I said, "I'm taking it," and I handed over 250 bucks for an 87 Trek Elance 400T.

I bring it home, and I'm thinking that I'll head down to the LBS. I have lights and a cyclocomputer, but I needed other things. I ask the guy what things he recommends carrying on a ride, he says a saddle pouch to carry a spare tube, multi-tool, and additionally a portable pump. I already had a set of tire levels so I was good there. I ask if it's worth getting a new helmet, and he said that it would be. I got a nice middle of the road Bell Alchera.

I get to the counter and I reach in my pocket to pay, and I forgot my wallet! I biked home, biked back. I bought everything and realized that I had too much to bike home with. I drop some stuff in my parents' car, and I head home, again. I transfer the lights, and I put the pouch with stuff and the pump. Now it's ready to ride!

If the Trek 400 is in good shape, get ready for some really nice riding on a really smooth riding frame. I have an 84 that I ride from time to time. It's a nice, smooth riding bike.

I could've fitted everything, but still would've had an extra helmet to deal with. I just put the new stuff in the car and rode back in my old helmet. I didn't feel like messing with it while sitting in the LBS.

No you are not. According to the book, only those who race with their road bikes can be called roadies.

You are going to be riding a road bike...

Notice the word "nearly." For now I'll be just riding it, but I'd definitely like to go further. I need to see what happens.

Get the terminology straight, that's a capital "R" Roadie. Non-racing road-discipline riders are lowercase roadies.

However, the one thing all R/roadies share, regardless of capitalization, is a deep-seated self-loathing. OP seems to be far too happy about all this, and therefore I move to withhold his R/roadie designation until such time as the OP decides to HTFU, say ass, and wipe that stupid grin off his face and rue the friggin day like the rest of us.

Oh I'm sorry, I've been enjoying cycling. I guess it's not the sport for me.

Keep riding, you'll probably "get" it sooner or later. Enjoy the ride.

With $4,000 Lightweight tubular racing wheels, you could get that bike down to well under 35 lbs.

One last question: Why is it that all roadies rue the day?

This is why I worship you like a God and sacrifice my worn, moldy, fragrant bib shorts to you each winter.

You just got a road bike and some gear and you are looking foreward to getting out and riding. In my mind that makes you a roadie. Just because some people on here think you have to go out and lose a few races like they do before you qualify for roadie status or Roadie status or whatever shouldn't put you off.

Let the excitement live and get out there and enjoy it. If you love it that much my bet is you will ride enough to become quicker than most anyway. Oh and what are you doing wasting your time on here when you have a new bike to ride?!

This week hasn't been so great. I've been pretty busy, but tomorrow shall be a great day for riding.
