weird / neat sighting of the day
well....i was out eating today and a group of riders was in the cafe. One of the bikes one of the guys was riding had a bike with crank arms that were the width of 2x4s and stranger than that......they were both in down 6 oclock position. I sat there and stared at it while i ate my food. When the guy left he had to start cranking with one leg and then clipped in with the other.
The crank arms were independent of one another from what i could tell. The bike was very very high end and probably not somthing ill ever be able to afford. I thought it was neat. Anyone ever ridden with these style cranks? No idea what kind they were. THe bike was a brand i had never seen (probably a custom carbon frame) or pronounce.
Thought it was pretty neat. Ive never seen a bike with independant crank arms before.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about cycling, but I feel like this would promote an uneven leg workout?
(Edit) nevermind, I see how it works exactly now. So it WOULD help.

I suppose the reason I thought otherwise is because in one of the videos the one guy was just spinning one crank arm and having the other one sit still.

Because the cranks are not connected, a strong leg cannot assist a weaker one. This means that if you are riding both legs at the same time, trying to do the same amount of work, the weaker leg is being stressed more and it will respond to this stress and eventually become the equal of the stronger leg. This same principle holds for the fore/aft muscles. The pushing leg cannot help the pulling muscles on the back stroke. As one trains these muscles will become the equivalent of the pushing muscles.
