Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

custom built OEM carbon tubular or Easton EC90 aero

I'm choosing between these options and am unsure of which i should get.
I'm looking for an aero carbon tubular as an upgrade over my current ac420 wheelset.
Want faster lighter wheels for road racing=)
Planning to use them as training wheels as well. Daily wheels.

1.
50mm china-made 300g T1000 carbon tubular rim (narrow wedged rim shape, only UD finish)
Laced with alchemy front and tune rear hub (possible hubs which are stiff)
16/20 cx ray front and cx race rear spokes (low spoke count for better aero)
Total cost about US$1070
Total weight about 1050g
(im guessing hubs can give me a stiffer build with the low spoke count)

OR

2.
i could drop hubs to WI hubs ending up with
Total cost about US$865
Total weight about 1150g

3.
EC90 aero wheelset
Benefits of 56mm rim and better aerodynamically shaped
Internal nipples for better aerodynamics
CX race spokes used which are thicker than cx rays (-ve point for aero)
Guaranteed of quality rims as compared to option 1.
Total cost about US$1175
Total weight about 1335g

what would u guys recommend and why?

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Go aero. Far more important for racing/competitive riding than the 200 grams you'll save with the lighter wheels. And since you say you'll train on them, the super light wheels might not stand up as well as the 56mm CF rims. I would guess the CF rims might ride better.

Another option: you can buy slightly used Zipp 404 CF tubular wheels on eBay for $1000-$1300 all day long. They only weigh 1250 grams, they are amazing wheels (I have a set I race on). And if you have to re-sell them they will retain 90% of their value since they cost over $2,000 new.

From your list, the Eastons look the best bet.

Never heard any Zipp defects that weren't cured, great company. I use my 404s day in day out and TTs.

Seek out psimet he knows what he's talking about.

it seems like OEM rims with WI hubs have the highest vote atm.
could voters pls explain why too instead of simply voting?=)
Thanks!

I've been looking at hubs and I personally wouldn't go any lighter than the WI. The others look a little lightweight, aside from being light in weight. You'll save about 100g? Not worth it.

And I like Easton wheels, although I don't ride carbon wheels. The set I'm building right now is an Easton rear hub and a WI front. The Easton was a bargain on ebay. The White I'm paying full internet retail.
