Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is This a Good Deal?

Hi, Everyone!

My LBS is selling a 2008 Kestrel RT800 (55 cm) for $1500. It comes with Sram Rivals (except FD is ultegra) and fulcrum racing 7 wheels. It weighs 18.95 lb with a stock saddle and my speedplay pedals according to shop's scale. I did a test ride and seemed that it fit me well ( I am 5'10'' and 32 inseam) but it is hard to tell after only a 5 - 10 min ride.

What do you think? Thank you for your time in advance!

not bad, although not spectacular. if you are a weight weenie, you can easily get this thing down to the 16 lb range. bikesdirect has the 2009 RT800 red for 2700. if you really like, you can get a full red drivetrain for $1200 & sell your rival for at least $600. to boot, this thing comes fully assembled, unlike the bikesdirect bikes, so i'd say go for it unless if you want to score something huge. do make sure the cockpit gets dialed in though.

Is it new? If so pay no more than 60% of 2008 MSRP. Try for 50% if possible.

Everything else is Rival but FD. According to LBS, a customer of their wanted have a Rival FD in exchange of an Ultegra FD. I am puzzled as well!

The Ultrega RD will work just fine but that's a really odd swap out no matter how good the customer.

A Rival FD costs $30-40. Tell them to switch it or credit you $50 and maybe that's a decent deal.
