Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Clipless Pedal Accident (Warning: Blood)

Well, I have been using clipless pedals for about 6 months and thought I had them mastered, NOT!!

Clipped in at a slight curb and fell over to the left, the large chair ring got my right leg. 8 stitches. I was going zero mph at the time.

I was 18 miles into my ride, then I rode about 5 miles to the doctors office and got it stitched up. Then rode 12 miles home. The tetanus shot hurt worse :-)

Before and after photos below: You can see where the chain ring scraped across my leg, one of the teeth caught.

Ouch... that is a cool scar though. I fell over in my clipless pedals after leaning against a Park Ranger's building to get water. Park Ranger opened the door and knocked me off my bike, no gnarly scar though.

No gaping wound on my part, but I have the cingular bars scarred onto the back of my left calf after the outer chainring bit me during a fall while learning to use clipless.

HTFU, keep it in the big ring and that won't happen.

Seriously though, OUCH! Looks like the doc did a good job putting the puzzle back together though.

Yeah! Battle scars, although from a rather frail accident

looks like you'll be back in action soon, though, if you're not already.

Now you have a badge of honor.
Wear it proudly!!
And a an added bonus, now you can rightfully justify shaving you legs.
Now that's a win, win situation.

It doesn't look like they cleaned the wound before they stitched it. Unless you stitched it yourself and that would be even better than the scar.

Are clip-less pedals really that hard? I fell once, in my garage, the very first time I clipped in. Never since, 3 years later... knock on wood.

+1 I fell coming into my driveway while unclipping the first time and have never fallen after that....

Sorry to hear about the accident!

What pedal/shoe combo are you using?
I'm going on my first clipless ride Friday with Shimano 105 pedals and Sidi Genius 5's. That picture just made made me nervous, but I'll practice all night Thursday in the living room! I'm going no matter what...

They cleaned it out pretty well, we stitched it up Rambo style if you know what I mean. Just felt like I got 8 big shots pretty much. I rode about 12 miles after....and I'll be back out tomorrow. I was going to do 60 miles today but ran out of daylight trying to get it stitched up (had to go to two places and called another). It still doesn't hurt much, it just feels tight, like the skin is pulled tight.

It did bleed pretty bad. I took my sock off and laid it over the cut and wrapped my spare tube around to keep it from bleeding too much as I peddled to the Dr's office. That was the worst part of the whole thing, the tube was so tight it kept my thy muscles from being able to move freely.

Look Keo 2 Max. It's not the peddles fault, I'm just a klutz. I have had stitches maybe 20 times in my life from stuff like this.

I'm still a fan of clip-less pedals. But I wish there was a way to put a guard on my big chain ring ;-) I'm going to do what RacerOne said, HTFU and use the big chain ring all the time!!

Ouch!
I'm just two weeks into the clipless trend but I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I've luckily not fallen over (all the way) yet, but damn, it's hard to get clipped back in from a stop light or sign!
I'm using 105 pedals with Pearl Izumi Quest Road as they fit my really flat feet well.

The bike is A.O.K. I wasn't moving so all that happened to the bike was a couple of scuffs on the quick release lever on the rear tire.
