Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone else have Aksium freehub trouble?

Yesterday my massive guads (apparently) managed to break the freehub on my Mavic Aksiums with no more than 2,000 miles on them. I haven't taken it off yet to check the pawls, but the cassette just freely turns in either direction.

It seems like this is an easy enough fix, though a new freehub is like $60. Is this a fluke or have others experienced similar failures? Basically, if I replace the freehub will I just be looking at replacing it again soon, or should I take this as an opportunity to pick up some new wheels in the ~$300 range?

And for your help, here is a picture of me testing a new bike out:

Hmmmm.

No problems but they're on a bike I keep at my in-laws in TX so it doesn't get alot of miles. Crappy roads so if this is a trend I'll find out soon enough.

i personally take the approach that if i break something once, its not worth me rebuilding, especially with how cheap the aksiums are. that doesnt count for things that wear out, or need regular replacement of course...

get some new wheels. i recommend fulcrums. they rock.

How do you even know you broke the freehub body without taking it off and checking it?

Go to Rogue Mechanic and watch his videos on Mavic freehub overhaul. All you need to take off a Mavic freehub is two allen wrenches. You don't even need to take off the cassette.

I guess I don't... yet. I guess I assumed that the freehub not catching means the freehub is broken?

One more reason to do not regret leaving the big M out of my shopping list 20 years ago.

Stop wasting money on cycling stuff until you can get a proper frame size reduction...on yourself.

I'd be lying if I said I had any idea what you're talking about.

No trouble with mine as of yet *hopes that this trend continues* but they have been a really reliable wheel set thus far. Really they have surpassed all my expectations.

I'm not sure if the original post was serious or not, but a friend of mine has a set of Mavics that "front freewheeled". He broke his shoulder.

His solution?

He bought another set.

Front freewheeled. Crashed but didn't break anything.

He has a pair of Reynolds now. And something else.

Other than the fake picture, I was serious. This actually happened yesterday. I'm lucky the failure happened as I was standing to take off... I shudder to contemplate what would have happened if I was standing to sprint in traffic.

I'm having the LBS replace the freehub, as pretty much anything I could afford right now won't be much better. If I have any more trouble with the things I'll take it as a sign to go wheel shopping.

That seems like a bad idea.

It's your money.

Is this a lame excuse for an April Fools' thread?

No. Is there a reason I shouldn't have the freehub replaced? It's worth the 10 or 20 bucks of labor to me, as I don't have the tools or the wherewithal to confront an explosion of springs and pawls.

And you never sprint in traffic (or at least with cars on the road)?

Not sure if serious...

With the number of Mavic wheels my shop has out, they've never had an out of box failure and little of any kind of failure at all. Best that I can tell, the Mavics use the same free hub body from the Aksiums up through the Ksyrium Elete and SL line. I have a set of Aksiums and a set of SLs and never had a problem out of either pair.
