Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay cleat bolt size

Anyone know the size of the bolts for the Zero cleats? Lost 2 on today's ride, which made unclipping at a traffic light real fun

I read somewhere that these are M4x11 - zat so?

Cheers,
V.

i assume you lost the ones that hold the outer plate on?

i find that the key with those bolts is to use plenty of locktite on the threads, and set them once, and dont fiddle with them. excessive movement defeats the locktite and causes them to loosen up.

Angryscientist - yeah, that's what happened. I was playing around with some wedges, and so had taken the bolts on/off several times, and I think the Loctite got rubbed off. I left them somewhat loose, as I typically do with the Speedplay cleats and here we are. Am going to douse the f**kers in Loctite next time before putting them on.

What I usually do is start tightening till the bolts start "clicking" in 90 degree increments. I do 1 click (ie, 1 quarter turn) and leave them be - has worked quite well until today.

Let's see if the one bike shop in Oman has spare bolts. Waiting 1-2 weeks for my bits'n'bobs to arrive wont be fun.

right on. there are "detents" built into the cleat plates that you are feeling. if the bike shop doesnt have them, lowes, home depot or any marine store (boaters world, etc...) will have them. they are just metric stainless steel pan head screws, no need to wait weeks for specific screws. (been there...)

that said, grab a bunch when you buy them, its always good to have a few around. i also always keep an extra set of cleats around, even if they're old ones, you never know when you will need them for parts or to buy some time between getting new ones ordered.

i bought 4x12's for cheap at home depot, but the metal they were made out of were much softer and needed replaced after a few months.

honestly, for me, its cheaper to buy new pedals with the cleats and sell he old ones on CL than buy new cleats....
