Custom bike?
I want to build my own bike and I'm planning on buying parts as I get the money. Are there any stores you suggest to buy parts from? Would Sport Chalet be good? How much would it most likely cost? Thanks in advance!

Performancebike and Ebay were the two I used... Generally building up a bike will cost more than just buying a bike.
Cost depends on what parts you plan on putting on it. Building a bike requires some mechanical skills and tools your probably will not have. Generally it's not recommend, but I enjoy.
I'm just about finished building a full carbon bike with SRAM rival. It's suppose to weigh under 17 pounds (without pedals) and cost no more than $1200. The reason I got the cost so low was because this build took me forever and I was really patient on sells and Ebay deals.

Hello JPhelps welcome to the forums. I agree building a bike is fun and rewarding but it certainly can cost alot more. unless you want some truly unique and have the skills your better off buying 'of the shelf' or semi custome from the local shop.

Build it if you want. For the stuff you're not comfortable doing take it to the LBS and pay the small fee for an expert to do it. I'm building mine. I actually save money because I don't need "get it out the door" wheels and saddle as well as the weird mix of components they're doing nowadays (e.g. Red with Force pieces). Enjoy!

Thanks for all the tips! I think I'll just wait until I get a new bike and then replace it part by part as I feel the need.

It's worth doing if you want a frame or component combo that is otherwise unavailable. For example, I like Campagnolo components, so I pretty much always have to buy the components separately and build up the bike myself. I also like Italian frames. It's worth it though. Ribble has good prices on the good stuff.

Building a bike from parts will cost significantly more than a new bike if you have to get all the pieces retail separately. It becomes a much better proposition pricewise if you already have parts to put on, or have the patience and interest to scour Ebay for good deals. Most folks I've heard who did an "Ebay build" said it took weeks, if not months, to collect all the pieces they wanted at good prices.
Part of this is because bike vendors get bulk discounts on the parts, and they come with minimal packaging as well. Like 100 cassettes in one big cardboard box. It's probably how Walmart offered a full 105-spec aluminum bike for $499 just last month - the new 105 components alone would cost pretty much that much if you bought it separately retail.
