Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I love DZ Nuts. Srsly. I NEVER used chamois cream but found that I really needed to when doing TT's because of the nature of the position. So last year before a TT I bought some because the shop was out of Assos. I liked it so much that it stays in my console in my car at all times.

...sometimes I put it on when i am just sitting around. i put it on my armpits as deodorant too. sometimes i spread it on toast.

I never buy overpriced bike-specific products of any sort. I got by using moisturizing lotions of various sorts for over 20 years. In late '08 I got a real nasty case of fungul infection that took several tubes of prescription medication to finally cure.

From then on, I've made my own cream from a nongreasy antifungal cream, hydrocortisone cream and a moisturizing cream, mixed in equal parts. All from WalMart. You get a lot of cream for not much money.

Chamois buttr is like $12.00 retail and will last a lot of rides. Not exactly what I consider over priced for saddle sore protection....

What about the old stand-by's, and by that I mean vaseline, and zinc oxide cream? I know that they were the goto protection back in the day, but does anyone still use them? And while we are still talking about alternatives, what about stuff like "wet", KY, or astroglide?

Vaseline and other petroleum products are very tough to clean out of todays modern synthetic chamois. Back in the old days when we used "real" chamois it was a different story.

I have that too. Bought the DZ nuts when CC had a Xmas sale. Both seem to work about the same for me, which is that they both work good.

I actually haven't seen the DZ product in the bike shops I frequent in Silicon Valley. I switch off between Assos or Chamois Butt-R euro-style. On double century rides I'll bring along two individual packets for the mile 140-150 food stop.

Remind me to avoid any BBQs or parties at your house this year where you are serving food. DZ Nuts aren't on my menu (that sounds horribly wrong but oh so amusing at the same time)

I have some Assos Creme, came with my bibshorts. I haven't opened it. 10 Wheels recommended Vaseline Creamy. So I tried it. Great stuff. It is cheap and works very well.

I don't buy 4-ounce bottles of chain lube for $8 either, when I can make that much lube for pennies.

Still trying to perpetuate the myth that Campy is more expensive? Campy often costs less to own than Shimano or SRAM.

Initial purchase price is only part of the total cost of ownership. I've used Campy parts for 5 years and resold them for 1/2 what I paid for them. A SRAM or Shimano part that old would be worth next to nothing.

I laugh at the folks who think they are getting by cheap when they toss chains after 2,000 miles or less and use 6 chains or more in attempt to protect a cassette. I get 2-3 times the mileage from my chains and more mileage from my cassettes.

Campy shifters are far cheaper than any other brand.

I paid about $35 each for my Chorus 11 speed chains. I can get them today for $38.

DZ Nutz was just on sale at Alfred E Bike for $10 or so per tube. I have enough to last me a couple years.

I wouldn't do noxzema, carbolic acid. I'm not trying to exfoliate my butt. I'm going to try Assos creme on tomorrow's ride. The label doesn't show what's in it.

Ok,that's fine but many people use it and it does have many similar ingredients:

Assos and Chamois Butter Eurostyle for me. I especially like the Eurostyle because it's a bigger tub for a little less money. On short rides I'll use the Vaseline Creamy (which is actually pretty good) or A+D diaper rash ointment. Both work well and are cheap too.

I just shave that area.....

The wife likes it so that is what matters

Last summer I had gotten a staph infection, it started out like jockitch and 3 days later I came to the painful conclusion it wasn't jockitch. I also just got over a clogged/infected hair folicle a couple weeks ago. It all sucks.....but i found that keeping the hair short/not there is best for me. No need for any creams....
