Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Here's a news blurb about the new Selle Italia saddle for "Big George" Hincapie (I seem to think he's about 6'3"). Looks pretty narrow - I'm guessing it is 130mm, which is the width of most of SI's saddles.

https://www.selleitalia.com/eng/index.html

(After hitting the link you have to click the "News" tab, and then look at the second item. For some reason copying the URL from the actual news item only points you to the home page.)

(The Max Flite mentioned above is 150mm, whereas the ProLink model is 144mm, and the regular Flite is 130.)

I'm 6'4", and a card-carrying Clyde at 240 lbs. Despite being a bit of a "wide-body", my sit-bone width measures as around 110-115mm, and by Specialized's fit chart that calls for a saddle that is ~143mm. (On the other hand, I was pretty slim up through college.)

My SI Prolink (144mm) fits nicely, whereas 130mm saddles tend to feel too narrow for me.

I think I'll be closer to the 150 mm widths but may have to try the prolink if none of the others pan out.

I used to ride forever with the older-gen Flite w/titanium rails. Is the newer Flite the same basic shape, updated aesthetically?

Check out Nashbar's GR2. Cheap and great Fizik Antares clone, though I eventually found an Antares on sale and find the stiffer padding to be a bit more comfy. The Selle San Marco SKN is also wide and has little padding. I don't remember what about it didn't work for me.

I'll be getting another GR2 for the bike I hope to be building up soon (the one I already have has been moved down to my commuter since, you know, it's cheap).

For the record, I'm 6'2.5" or so.

The GR2 is 139mm wide. I remeasured my sit bones at the LBS again today and they are around 140mm apart. So in order for the saddle to fit right it has to be ~148mm or wider. The saddles in the 143mm range are wide enough but barely and if they have any arch/curve, as most do, it's uncomfortable.

The new flite looks to be the same as the old one. But the Max Flite Gel Flow is wider 150mm and more padded and heavier at 290g. The heaviest Flite is 240g, the True Gel.

Looks like Joost Posthuma rides on the Flite or Max Flite...

Here is my list of some possibilities so far:
  • San Marco Regal 148mm/220g
  • San Marco SKN Racing 150mm/185g
  • Selle Italia Max Flite Gel Flow 150mm/290g
  • Selle Italia Turbomatic 153mm/230g
  • Selle Italia Man Gel Flow 149mm/280g
  • Specialized Toupe 155mm/195g
  • Bontrager InForm RXL 154/215g
I found a LBS that has the San Marco Regal test saddle. I'm not sure how to get a hold of the rest.

Bradley Wiggins over 6' 2" (my dark horse pick for TdF this year) He was a beefy 180+lb track guy who over the past two years and most recently looks skinny even when compared to Michael "The Chicken" Rasmussen.

I'm 6'3" and use a specialized Alias 143mm. I thought it was as uncomfortable as hell when I got it (it came with the bike). It stayed as uncomfortable as hell for about a year, then I changed my stem (lower and shorter). All of a sudden it was really comfortable because my bum was hitting it at the right angle. The seat is hard to get right because it depends on everything else being right first. If you have tried that many, i'd look at the set up of the rest of the bike...

To the OP, you mention the San Marco Regal but you put a link to the new Regale. The "e" on the end is important, because it is a different saddle. The Regal is a very comfortable and extremely popular saddle (I ride one FWIW), but it is not light. Despite that, Boonen rides one. The new Regale is a lighter, slimmer version of the Regal. I took the Regale test saddle from my LBS for a day, and I like it, but it is not quite the same as the Regal.

I was fitted on the bike professionally by a guy with good reputation. The only adjustment I made after was to lower the seat by about 5 mm. But I will keep that in mind as I narrow down the choices.

The difference between the Regal and Regale? Just the amount of padding?

A Rolls has a rounded top and I don't think it will work for someone with wide sit bones. Mine are a little wide and I lasted about 90 seconds when I tried a Rolls.

Just looking for ideas on road saddles that would be wide enough without looking or weighing like they came off Gran pa's bike.
Specialized Toupe 155
Selle Italia Max Flite
Selle San Marco Rever

The Toupe is really good and light. The Rever is light as well but doesn't have the cutout center. The Max Flyte has more cushioning and is heavier.

In terms of shape, the GR2 is closer to the fizik Arione (just wider). Wierd that you mention the SKN, thats what I have on my bike right now, I find its too wide at 150mm and if you're sit bones don't fit it perfectly the "wings" of the saddle seem to have a lot of flex to them. That said, I order an Antares from nashbar and should be here in a week or so. I've already tested it out and it seems like this might be the one.

To the OP, if you don't a curved saddle (I don't either) you should check out the Antares. I ride a regal too but it got demoted to my commuter/everyday fixed gear bike. The issue I had with it is, the widest part of the saddle which I wanted to sit on is right where the rivets are and the padding is not so my arse seems to get irritated by constantly moving on and off this padded/non-padded area. FWIW I had the regal racing replica (cheaper version) thus my advise would be to try a true regal and see how that treats you.

Trying the Regale today & next couple of days. I sat on it to get the height adjusted and it felt good.

I also found a LBS that is about to get a set of test saddles from Selle Italia so I'm looking forward to trying some of those.

Im 6'2, 170 and ride a Sella Gel Flow. Something I dont think people have mentioned is that a lot of comfort comes from the chammy in your shorts. Also give your ass atleast a few months to break into riding more often before doing anything drastic. I can put down lots of miles on the Gel Flow and feel fine after long rides.

To each his own: I've had a hell of a time finding a saddle that is narrow enough for my 99mm sit bones... Smallest saddle I've seen in the Bontrager inForm RXL at 128mm.

I never thought that would be a problem for anyone. I would have thought the only issue on the small side would be the unnecessary extra weight. Are the inside of your thighs rubbing against the saddle or what?

Something I dont think people have mentioned is that a lot of comfort comes from the chammy in your shorts.
After riding the Regale today I realized I need better shorts than my Pearl Izumi Attack. The Regale is wide and flat enough just not padded enough for my new to cycling butt.

I expect that you need to have someone at your LBS of choice fit you to a saddle properly, because I have the suspicion that you lack the knowledge to do it properly yourself.
You should probably not call people out for having poor bike fit. I'm 6'4 and have tried several 143cmish "wide" seats, and they are all too narrow. Yes, my seats are properly fitted. Expecting someone outside the normal bellcurve of height to fit on a saddle desgined for someone much smaller is silly.

Excellent starting point. I have a regal on 2 of my bikes now.

I'm 6-5, 215 btw, not that it has any relationship to fitting a saddle as far as I know. But if you find a relationship let us all know.
