Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Test Ride

Last night I discovered that Trek was having a factory demo just a bit away from where I live so I decided to show up and give the fancy carbon a whirl. As a relative cycling noob, I wanted to see why everyone here fusses about DA and top of the line carbon bikes (I ride a Trek 1.2)

I test rode a series 6 Madone w/DA and a Gary Fisher Chronos Pro w/Ultegra

I learned what stiff means. Wow, fun . I actually preferred the Gary Fisher over the Trek, and couldn't tell a difference between DA 7900 and Ultegra 6700 (the ultegra was admittedly adjusted better though). Unfortunately there wasn't any sram or campy for me to try

I also took a top fuel 9.8 out on the mtb trail and was on my side w/in 3 sec . I guess I should have stuck to platforms for my first off the road experience.

The point behind this whole thread? To all you beginners, look up some of the bigger retailers for test ride days in your area. You get ~30 minutes of guilt free riding to play with some really fun toys. No strings attached, no pressure to buy - and they give out freebees. I felt like a little kid again

And no, I am not a shill for trek/bontrager. As long as its a road bike I'll give it a spin.

Thanks for the heads up on this, it will be close to me at the end of the month. Currently considering a Fisher Ion Pro or Trek 2.3. Do you know if they had either of those bikes?

i got to test ride my boss's project one 6.9 with sram red and bont xxx lite full carbon wheels. I already had 2.5hrs of tough training in my legs, but damn does that thing move. the guy riding behind me said i got some "serious lean" into the corners, i normally corner like a maniac anyway but this thing had the ultremo DD's on, i felt like i could have ran my knee across the ground going round. i'm trying to persuade our trek rep to bring his fleet of 5 series and 6 series with 6700, 7900, Di2 and SRAM so we can all have a play on them.

They have 6 in PA, but none in Massachusetts. I'm guessing they are selling well here and not so good in PA.

Oh, its really a MTB thing. They only have one road bike available in the NE events.

Nope, they only stock their high end models. (madone 5 & 6 series, Chronos Ultimate) I did see one guy at the test day who was looking to try a pilot 2.1 because he wanted to buy it eventually; he was pretty bummed when he found out what they carried.

I think the test day is mostly marketing, and they only want to show off the "cream of the crop."

The majority of the stock was MTB, but they had 5-6 Madones and 4-5 Chronos Ultimates at mine. I was testing them in a park w/mtb trails though...

Cervelo test ride is coming to my city in May and if you sign up you can test ride the S3, P3, and R3. They are doing a lot of cities too. All you have to bring is your own pedals and shoes.
