Numb hands after long ride

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Numb hands after long ride

My hands start to tingle on rides, and after a long ride they'll get numb, like they're 'asleep'.
Anyone else get this?

Just curious.
thanks.

i've been getting that... i usually just change hand positions...

sometimes my arms get numb... but i have a large camelbak so i think it restricts my blood flow... i have to tighten the strap that goes across the chest soon...

Try to relax, don't grip the handlebars.
Worked for me.

What type of bars are you riding on? Do you wear padded gloves too?

change hand positions between hoods and tops, go to the drops, do a little one-handing if you need to, free-handing if you can, you'll be fine.

Pic of the nerves in the inside of the hand below. Key is don't compress them for extended periods. Shift grips and like was said, relax. GL

Those pics look like Netter rip offs.

I forgot to mention aerobars. They give total hand-pressure relief.

I double wrap my handlebars, and try to reposition my hands as much as possible to prevent numbness.

Bend your elbows all the time. Locked elbows force all your upper body weight down onto your wrists and hands, causing pinched nerves and all kinds of other problems. With improved posture, you may not need more padding, which can negatively affect your bike handling.

I tried Barphat tape and gel pads. Thin is better. The control is waay better. Caveat: I started out on Cinelli bars with really thin vinyl tape, no gloves, Record 2 x 5 with no rubber on the hoods. It was a great teaching tool.

Also, it could be you have too much weight on your hands from your fit.

See this: https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/fitting.htm

Or, if your like me and have mangled hands from breaking them multiple times in your younger days, you can try getting a pair of Spenco cycling gloves. They're well-padded and have a nice little cutout in the pad to make sure you don't put pressure on your median nerve. They work for me.

I think just about everyone who has done a long ride has had your problem. It's not uncommon at all. All of the suggestions so far are good ones, and I have only to add, when numbness happens, put the affected hand behind your back and reach up as if you were scratching the upper middle of your back and wiggle your fingers. That is the fastest way I have found to relieve the numbness. Good luck and happy ridding.

Bar Phat tape and gels, plus my bars are double taped to make them extra big and fat. heavily padded gloves on top of that. no probs.

At 35-49 degrees my fingers are sometimes numb. Rarely do they get numb in normal weather conditions in my area (55+)

+1

This has always been the answer for me. I finally realized the tingle in my hands is a sure sign that I'm "riding lazy" with my elbows locked and sitting too far upright. A little bend at the waist and a little bend helps put a little bend at the elbows. That fixes it for me.
