Geometry - remind me of something...
I have a Tommasini Tecno and I've just bought a CAAD9 this weekend.
They are virtually the same size, tube-by-tube, but they feel quite different (I don't mean materially.. ie. steel vs alloy). I've not done enough miles to really tweak, but I think it's because of the seat tube angle.
The Tecno has a seat tube angle of 73.02 degrees and the Cannondale 73.5 - so, the latter puts me over, or closer to, the cranks... by roughly 10-15mm, using a spirit level and tape.
Question: Obviously I can move the seat, but remind me... what difference does it make when the saddle is relatively CLOSER (or more vertical) to the cranks... does it work the thighs more or the glutes?
Thanks.

Main property of moving saddle forward is being able to lay flatter. You still want your saddle to be at a height that fits your pedaling style to get maximum power and efficiency.

I would say Weight. Caad 9 5 weighs in at a slim 18.6lbs. Plus! The stem length and the position of the hoods/shifters on the Caad 9 are slightly further over the front wheel. Some attribute this to the stretched out feeling on the Caad frame.

The difference in the STA does not change the saddle position that much. Roughly, it's only 6mm. For complete accuracy, use the formul (cosA-cosB) times the saddle rail height. Drop a plumb bob from the saddle tip to see how far it's behind the BB center. Of course the same saddle should be in use for the most relevant information.
Moving the saddle further back MAY make more use of the glutes, but it's not automatic. The rider still has to learn which muscles to fire. Some people develop a bad habitat of using nothing but the quads. It takes some practice and deliberate relaxing of the quads to force some use of the glutes.
