So about 50 miles into a 65 mile ride, I was headed into a hill, shifted into my small chainring and my front derailleur comes dislodged from my frame. After stopping, I see that the whole front hanger has pulled away from the frame (see pics), and is just dangling there by one screw... This bike is about 2 months old, with 5-600 miles on it, no reason for something like this to happen. So what do I do? It is still fully covered by a warranty, so that will not be a problem, but what is the actual process? Am I responsible for stripping the bike and sending them the frame, and then re-building it when the new frame arrives? I got this mail order from Competitive Cyclist...

Also, has anyone heard of this happening before? to BMC's or otherwise..

I'll never understand why people think the best place for advice is here (at least for something like warranty on a new bike).....why wouldn't you contact the place you bought it first? If there anything like the places around me they'll take good care of you.

okay... there was a bottom screw, i have it in my jersey pocket. Why would i try and fix a $700+ frame that is still under warranty by myself? (besides, the paint is all f'd up in that area as well because of this pulling off)... and lastly I come here because it is sunday, so CC is closed, and I wanted to get some info on if this happens alot, and if I have to go through CC or BMC. I have emailed them as well, but just thought I would ask to see if there is some thing I should say to them, someone in particular I should talk to, or if I should just go straight to BMC (who is no longer distributed by QBP as of a few weeks ago, so i would need some advice in figuring that out as well if someone knew something about it...) Jeez folks, sorry I asked.

[strike]Yeah.. I'll second the opinion that there newver was a second screw. There is paint visible and they would not paint the hanger just chill'n there before everything was attached. Human error. Get a new frame or have this one completely rebuilt on someone else's dime for sake of safety... OR... [/strike]if everything is fine then HTFU and buy the screw thats needed since sooner or later stuff is just gonna happen and if it can be fixed for cheap then count yer blessins and move on.

That sucks though.

Darn man... 1st the seat problem if i remember right and now this? Well the good thing is that fix it wont be a problem the bad part is that it could happen to any of us also. I would email them both, the US rep is a pretty nice guy probably he will tell you what to do or something? He always answer emails and stuff. Phone him maybe?

If it is an easy fix, why not just do it yourself? Save everyone time and money.

You would most likely have to strip the frame, pack and ship it, Competitive Cyclist or BMC will take a look at it, probably essentially do exactly what you would do at home (screw it back in), repack the frame and ship it to you. Then you have to build the bike again. You'll be out of a bike for a week or two

ok, well, there is the pop rivet for that, but it's harder to remove once it's in there.

If the threads are stripped, then its not an easy fix (it is but most people don't have the tools)

its kind of a matter of principal to me that I dont have to do relatively major fixes on a 6 week old frame... that just doesnt make sense to me. It also took off some paint around the braze-on, so it will look like crap. and what if I want to sell this later, a DIY fix would take a few hundred off the price minimum.

Well find out if the threads are still there is the easy part, probably he can even screw a tiny bit of the remanent bolt in there. If threads are still there i would f.. it and do it my self, just in case the Bottle bolt is an M4 right?

I'm sure he will call everywhere tomorrow, hope the guys gave him a good solution, hope it is the 2010 frame or maybe he can pay the difference for the upper line of frames???

Buy some thread locking compound. 'Loc-tite' is a popular brand. Then put new screw in (first check that interior threads are healthy ) Then forget about it, go for a ride and when someone asks you how you like your BMC, you can say "It Sux!"

I agree, it's just a matter of wanting to deal with the process of shipping it back to them and the added work that it entails; I'd probably look to do it myself and if it's beyond what I can do then I'd send it back. Either way call CC and see what they're willing to do and accept charges for then assess what's best.

Another reason I deal with my LBS. Should I have a problem under warranty, they get to deal with it.

So this wasn't mechanical to begin with? Possible the FD hit the chainring? Just curious if that's the case and if so.... It's not a BMC problem. Might be a CC problem?

When you pay that much for a bike and you are in warranty, USE THE WARRANTY. Do not try and fix this yourself, it is why warranties exist.
