Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The way I see it, if you're going to buy those for $500, why not just save another $500 and get some Zipps or something similar.

Probably because they cost $365 shipped....

I've heard nothing but good things about Soul. In a couple of months, I'm ordering a set of 4.0's.

May I ask why the 4.0? Why do you like them over the 3.0? Thanks.

they are one of the deepest alu clinchers you can buy, especially for just under 5 bills. i'm sure the 3.0's would be a great choice as well, with slightly less aero advantage.

3.0 will be slightly less aero than 4.0 but 3.0 would have less weight. if you live flat ground go with 4.0 more hills go with 3.0

the 4.0 is nice because there simply isn't any other 40mm rim out there that's as light as what soul uses.

now the 3.0 uses a 30mm rim that's probably the same thing as the kinlin XR-300 and otherwise uses what appear to be either aerolite/CX-ray spokes or DT aero spokes.
basically, they're not that different from what you can build from parts available off the market.

Straight from Soul's website, "For a lighter wheelset, we are also offering the S3.0s in an SL version. The S3.0SL utilises the Prodigy V3 hubs and 2.3mm bladed spokes instead to reduce the weight. Stiffness is maintained with an improved bracing angle offered by the Prodigy hubs, but durability is lower due to the smaller spoke section used."

So, for $365 shipped, you get their lower quality hub and bigger spokes compared to $470 shipped for the better hub and smaller spokes. I am also deciding between which Soul wheels to get. I'm not sure if the Prodigy hub is just designed differently or if its overall quality is better than the S-series hub. It's confusing.

the 3.2mm bladed spokes are heavier than the 2.3mm bladed spokes.
2.3mm bladed spokes are butted, the 3.2mm spokes are not butted and the cross section is wider.

DT aerolite/sapim CX-ray
vs.
DT new aero.

I'm bouncing between the 3.0's and 4.0's; 4.0's for the aero advantage and 3.0's for the weight. If I do go for 3.0's I'll be getting the Prodigy hubs.

can any one tell if the 3.0 have the torodial shaped as compared to the 4.0s? From my reading this seems to have more of an impact on aero than another 10mm of depth

I've had a set of the 3.0s for about a month. Weighed them at the LBS 1540-1545g with tape. I got the red spoke option. They look great on my black Allez. I put Michelin PR3 and latex tubes on them. I noticed a big difference in the ride compared to my OEM Alex rims and Specialized tires.

I don't know if it's the tires (likely) or the rims but it is definitely better. I'm also faster (placebo effect??? ) or the 700g or so weight reduction and better aero. Don't know. I like them though. I don't have any photos yet. I'll try and get some shots this weekend if you're interested.

Also, even at 30mm with the bladed spokes they catch quite a bit of air in cross wind. Anyway, I think they're a good deal for the price.

My only issue is the freewheel is kind of loud.

Am I missing something here?
Soul wheels ~500 usd for the set
Zipp wheels ~2000 usd for the set

Wouldn't it be an extra $1500?

the saving for double the value the wheels is the dumbest argument I have ever heard. Its like say if you are looking for a mid market Honda to just save another 25K and get an BMW M3 because its better. And even there your getting some thing that looks like twice the value I refuse to believe that there is 2x the value in a pair of zipps compared to the souls.

The OP never said what he was looking for out of the wheels. Maybe he is looking for the M3 equivalent. The way I see it, when if I'm going to shell out $500, why not a little more and make sure I get what I really want, since I'm probably not going to be buying another pair of wheels anytime soon.

The 3.0's are more than sufficient for a 185lb rider however if you want to go bombproof get the 4.0. I'm 155 and I have the 2.0, no flex at all and no problems after 1,000 miles
