Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So what exactly is gained by going to ultegra hubs?

You know your favourite ultegra/OP combo that only comes in 32h?
why ultegra hubs over 105 if you're only going to use 32h?

The rear, they weigh the same, they both have similar finish qualities and probably will last just about the same.

and some other stuff thrown in, to show the improvements... which is in everything, except weight.

Front hubs, on the other hand, do show improvements in weight, even if it's very minor... but is it really necessary to go with shimano hub for the front?

My buddy who worked at a bike shop said the Ultegra hubs were great and were better than the 105. I think he just wanted me to feel good about my purchase...

My Ultegra hubs just feel a little smoother. Perhaps a placebo effect perhaps not. I have ultegra o/p, ultegra cxp33 and 2 pairs of 105 reflex (clincher) wheelsets. I like my 105 hubs they are totally accepable and I ride the snot out of them. But I do feel a difference between them, although its hardly enough to bother with.

The differences between Tiagra, 105, and Ultegra are negligible. The reason the Ultegra/OP choice is is popular is that they are already built by someone else, and offered for cheap. If you're building yourself and want to save some cash, Tiagra all the way.

This. When buying a complete, already assembled wheel, the Ultegra/OP is just offered in such mass quantity that it beats any custom built or prebuilt 105. There's nothing magical about Ultegra, and since I build my own wheels, I use the best hubs I can get at the best price.

Back in the day, I used to buy RX100 hubs, peel off the stickers, shine them up with Simichrome, repack the bearings with good grease and adjust them properly, and then lace them up with whatever rims I was racing on. Having rebuilt and repacked 105, Ultegra, and Dura Ace hubs as a shop mechanic, there were no significant differences, mechanically, between RX100, 105, and Ultegra, with the main differences being in QR skewers and the finish of the hub shells. Dura Ace were definitely higher quality.
