Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for New York Centurys

I live in Putnam county, NY and I think I'm finally ready to ride my first century! My only concern is getting lost, or picking a route that is un-bikeable. Can any fellow new york cyclists recommend a ride maybe they have done in the past? I don't mind having to drive to the "starting point" as long as it's a good ride.

The north/south county trailway from lake gleneida in Carmel down to a bit past Van Cortlandt park in the Bronx and back is a nice, easy century. Few spots where you have to hop on local roads, but for most of it, you ride free of traffic.

the Tour de Putnam every year has a century ride through putnam county. i did it last yr. pretty challenging ride, lots of hills, will def be doing it again this year. As far as centuries in our area...riding across the river is always nice. I'm from dutchess so i would ride over the mid hudson bridge, over the gunks to the ellenville area and loop around. Thats about a 98 mile ride depending on the route you take. Where in putnam county are you from?

I'm from Mahopac/Carmel. I think I'll take the north/south county trailway back and forth. I didn't realize it went south of the bronxville area. I've been down there, but couldn't find where the path continued to reach the very end. But any more recommendations will be appreciated. I love finding and being told of great rides in the area.

this Sunday, 5bbc is hosting a 100 mile from Babylon or a 145 from nyc out to montauk. I think im marshaling riding the 145 or the 100 if they need me. They have rest stops along the way and a bbq at the end. They also throw everybody's bike on a truck for the return when your on the train on your way back. The bike than meet you back at your starting point.

haha well i think the 145 and the 100 are for more serious guys, there's also a 45 i think. Well im not putting my bike in the truck haha. Ill be driving home, no way in hell im gonna let some random man/women pack my bike in a moving vehicle along with like 100 other bikes. looks like for some nice weather sunday, i would never pay the amount they want to ride my bike to montauk but im getting in for free from the shop i work at (brands cycle). If your looking for race prep we have a group the leaves from wantagh on satuday for 40 miles. and there are a group of guys call "triangle riders" than have a triangle ride on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I havent ridden with them yet (bike issues) but ive herd from guys at the shop they're A pace.

You can always do a century out to montauk on your own time also. I live in babylon so it exactly 100 to mtk point. Ill probably do one by summers end (ive been doing it for 5 years now) If you guys are interested your more than welcome to tag along.

Unless your planning on going off road I can't see how some of a route can be un-bikeable

Sounds nice, but I'm not paying that crazy amount just to ride my bike.

@ a_phat_beat: I know that 9 up where I am is horrible for cycling. No shoulders & people drive like it's a highway. I don't know if it's any better over on the other side of the river, but If it is, that sounds like an alright ride.

@Dheorl: unbikeable - Cars are whipping by you at 60+ mph on a road with ABSOLUTELY no shoulder, with bad pavement and people honking at you constantly. That is what I consider unbikeable. It's like a death wish.
