Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike mods

I just recently bought a Trek 7.3 FX. After a few weeks, I regret not getting a road bike, like a 1.1 or something. Is it possible to swap out the stock handlebars for road handlebars? Where could I get cheap brake-shifter combinations?

can you take your 7.3FX back to the store and trade it in?
that would be the cheapest option.

failing that, sell the 7.3FX and buy a 1.2
that would be the second cheapest option.

You could put drop bars on the FX and get some "brifters." You would also have to put on smaller tires, 700x32 is too big. However I don't really think it would be worth it. If you were to put that stuff on, you'll probably want to try and change out the cassette. Then you would probably want to change out the crankset so you can get more of a road bike gearing. Not to mention the frame isn't really a road bike frame. The wheelbase its a bit longer and the angles different.

If you do want to make your bike faster, all I would do is put on some 700x23 tires and maybe bar ends so you can get low. Other than that I'd save up money a real road bike, with real road geometry and gearing.

Yup, that's all I'd do. Get some good tires and keep your old tires. Bar ends are cheap. Ask around, some of the bike flippers on BF probably have a set or two hanging around. If you follow this advice, you can ride the bike a bit faster, more like a road bike then save up and buy the bike you want later. Don't forget to keep the road tires and put your old tires back on when you sell your flat bar bike.
