Garmin Edge 500 - How to set Virtual Partner variables?
So Tuesday I went on a ride with a group with the whole course loaded on my Edge 500. I left it on the screen such that it shows the course and the two fields: Distance to finish and Time to finish. However, the odd thing was that shortly into the ride, I got the message that the Virtual Partner has finished the course. In addition, the Time to finish was ridiculously short, as in for the 60ish mile ride, it said something around 20 minutes, and counted down very slowly. It wasn't until today that I looked at my Edge, and when I hit "Edit Course", it showed the following:
Total: 00:18:57
59.59 mi
Avg: 189 m h
Max: (this was blank)
So does that mean the average speed on the virtual partner was 189 MPH?! Is there a way to change the variables for the virtual partner? I can't seem to find out how to do this. The course was mapped out on ridewithgps, if that makes any difference.

Yeah, there is a way to do it. I've read it before in the Garmin Edge 500 forum. It seems that it needs to be loaded in km rather than miles and then there are a series of keystrokes that can adjust it up and down. Sorry to be so inexact, but if you search the Garmin forums at https://forums.garmin.com/forumdisplay.php?f=219 you should be able to find your answer...
Good luck

you can set the virtual partner to ride at a certain speed.. like say 20mph.. he'll ride that speed the entire time and you can watch to see how far ahead or behind you are...
p.s. you did a 60ish mile course with no locking up of the computer.. lucky.. mine locks up often when i use course mode..

Where do I do this? I mapped my course on ridewithgps, and it has no setting. Upon loading the course, it lets me set a percentage of the speed, but again with an average speed of 189 mph... it is still extremely fast.

Does ridewithgps allow you to set the speed at all? Are there options? The threads below refer to gpsies.com and mapmyride.com. If ridewithgps doesn't allow you to specify the speed, then you may need to try another site.

I do not see an option for ridewithgps to do this. Bummer. I really like ridewithgps too. Maybe time to try that bikeroutetoaster.com

Once you select "Do Course", you can press the "Power/Light" button and adjust the course time by a percentage. This may get the VP down to a reasonable speed.
I found this post on Gamins site, have not tried it in a ride yet but will be doing one Sat.

1 plan your ride on map my ride . com
2 go to the route tab on map my ride . com
3 save to garmin/crs
4 set speed or pace
5 download crs file to wherever you want on your computer (upload to computer as crs NOT tcx)
6 upload the file into Garmin Training Center.... File... import
7 in GTC find the courses folder on the left look inside folder and find downloaded ride
8 plug garmin 500 into computer (mine takes a few seconds to find the 500)
9 select course to be uploaded to garmin 500
10 select device on GTC software and then select send to device
11 eject garmin 500 from computer
12 power up garmin 500
13 hold page/menu button to select training
14 select courses and find the course you just uploaded....
15 select do course
16 go ride....
it seems like a lot of steps.. but once you get the hang of it its easy..
p.s. i did this on a mac.. but i doubt the software is much different... if at all..
