Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

34 beats 39...

so, I had been riding a Record crankset, in the 53/39 configuration. And grunting it out on some of the grades on our training routes (some 18%+)... 39 with a 25 makes for a slow 225lb me up those grades. I finally gave in, found a great deal on a Control Tech carbon 50/34 crankset so I ordered it up and installed it today. at 800gm's it is a bit heavier than my UltraTorque carbon Record by about 140gms. Still very acceptable and man are these things beefy!!! Install was a breeze tho the seals feel a bit on heavy on drag, tho I am sure they will lossen up with some miles. Just did a quick 30miles this afternoon between raindrops, and what a difference. I didn't get anything major incline wise in but can already tell it's gonna be nicer. So if you're on the fence about compact or not, and live with lots of climbing, then go compact...

I wish I had gone compact long ago. Many of the guy's I ride with swear by compact, and I can see why Just my 2cents worth anyway .... lol, anyone in the market for a nice, slightly used Record 10sp UT crankset?

I found the compact is a good call for my riding in Western PA. I still have the Campy 53/39 on my 90's Bianchi, but got an FSA 50/24 on my the Specialized Roubaix I got last year. My cadence is higher and my knees are happy!

I use a 50/36. I've never ridden a 50/34, but it's probably a little better shifting. I live around some 20%+ grade hills and decided to go with the compact. Of course the 11-28 helps out a lot, but the only reason I got it was because it was very cheap. I wish I had a 12-25 though.

Yes! I switched one of my bikes to a 34 and am very happy with it.

Yeah, I also have a 53/39 for Punxsy, PA.. Even though I'm a lighter rider, I just got a kidney transplant and I'm dying on these hills now.. I think I'm gonna get a compact crankset whenever I can find one that's cheap.

I did not need to, just slid it down the seat tube. I am not sure about other ones, I have a Record front.

yeh, those 20%'s are azz kickers....one of the reasons I went with compact is that dang Campy has a hole in their cassette selection for 10sp stuff. either a 26 or a 29... no in between so that helped in my decision to go with compact. the 25 seems very nice now, though I will want to go with an 11 I found today on my ride. As I am getting older I am adapting that old adage of "work smarter, not harder" lol

hey eddie, Punxsy isn't too far away.. hows Phil doin'? anyway, not sure what you consider as cheap but here is where I got mine from, a very reasonable price and includes bbkt cups and all. I had gotten it to try, and if I like the compact I was going to get another Record, but I like it well enough that I am just going to run this one.... https://www.bcmultisport.com/Shop/Control/fp/SFV/32764
