Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. Might as well just get it tattooed.

About a third of my rides result in said markings.

Ever since I began unclipping my right foot when I stop, I have few instances of chain-hickey. My current riding partner, somehow, manages to get filthy on every ride. I still don't get how she does it.

Naptha, WD-40, denatured alcohol will work. I typically just use mechanics hand cleaner -- I think it's called Fast Orange. I get it from Auto Zone. I wipe my chain after each ride, which sometimes gets hands greasy. Easy to clean up any leg marks while washing the hands.

I had a crash last March and the chainring lightly gashed my right calf. I now have a chainring scar where the imprint shape of 4 teeth are prominent.

thats why I never unclip my right foot on a ride.

appropriate BF answer : that wouldn't happen if you never leave the big ring. HTFU

I've had it twice this spring. Second time was this morning. But, both times it was because I dropped the chain. Other than that, I don't usually get greasy from riding.

I like Fast Orange, it makes your hands smell good.

I never get it anymore once I learned what a "Cat 5 stamp" was. It's not hard, just make sure your leg doesn't get anywhere near the drivetrain.

How does your calf come in contact with your chain? Curious, since I've never had this happen in many thousands of miles of cycling...

I think it's mostly when not riding. I always clip out with my left foot when stopping, but if I'm ever straddling the bike with two feet on the ground, it happens since I put it in the small ring when I store it. 54t big ring is unavoidable obviously.

Shampoo - works every time when the regular bath soap won't budge it.

On the road - what Machka says...baby wipes. Even better if in the individual sachets (put in saddle wedge)

I only get the mark on my calf when I reapply lube and do not wipe the chain off very well.
