1st Century done today!
Well I decided to take the day off work and the weather was good and do my 1st 100 miler. I had gone 60 before and a lots of 50's so this was just to say I did a century.
Solo ride took 5:22 total elapsed time was 5:42. Had I had a support staff it would have been easier and I don't feel to bad ride now a little thirsty. I went into about a 10mph headwind for about 45 miles out some cross wind in places. Then I turned around and had fun the last 1/2. I managed to average 20mph for the last 50 so I was pleased.
Have done numerous marathons in the past a century is a different animal. Not nearly the hurting factor but I lost some water. I just takes some mental effort to keep at it for that long. Pushing 49 years old next month I did not want to do anything living on the edge of hitting the wall. I wonder what I could manage with a group and support staff, that would make a difference I am sure.
I be glad to go back to running the next few days and leave the bike in the garage. I never take any food during marathons only use water but to be out that long you need food.
Now I see why these fellows dope that want to win the Tour de France. I guess I better have some pizza and beer.

Well done! I did a moderately hilly century this past Sunday. Felt good to be out like that again.

Nice ride.
Only twenty minutes stopped seems like you're pushing it a bit.
I find the ride easier if I take a few breaks.
Hope you enjoyed the pizza & beer. I usually go for a steak. Hey, you need the protein, right?

As an old marathoner I find that the stopping is a problem because they don't stop the clock in a marathon so you can take a break. I did however take the break to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and water at 44 miles. At 75 I had another 32 ounces of fluid and some cheese crackers but would have like to have keep riding while I was eating and drinking. I still wish the actual down time was less than 10 minutes but I justify it because a bike can be dangerous. If you hit the wall running you simply start walking, but if you get a bit dizzy or something on a bike a 20 plus mph it can be problem.
I can tell you one thing I did not take enough fluid. I have really put away the liquid since I stop almost 10 hrs ago. I took a total of 80 onces of water during the ride not nearly enough. In my marathons I never got thirsty at all during the race which is a sign you are taking enough liquid. The old story goes that if you get thirsty during a marathon it is too late you are going to blow up.
Well on a bike I guess the wind sucks the liquid right out of you. In the future I need to take much more liquid but I did carb load the body yesterday which actually means you take in more liquid to store the glycogen. Since the ride I have drank at least 120 onces of fluid, never in any marathon have I come close to need the liquid like riding the bike.

to the OP or anyone I guess. I'm planning an overnight century and will have access to NO services. meaning I'll have to carry everything I need. I can't do it as fast as you so I'm planning 6-8 hrs. how much total fluid would you suggest I carry?
also the longest I've ever run was 3 miles, a few times I've done this twice in the day but separated by several hours. I thought it would be fun to try my commute on foot run-walk-run. its 13 miles and maybe I can get someone to pick me up and bring me home. what do you think? kinda dumb?

OP - well done! strong ride by the sounds of it.
Depends on temps and how much you usually consume. I would recommend some isotonic drink as well as pure water.
A day metric here in the tropics (35C, 75% humidity) I can go through 3-4 ltrs easy. In the UK summer (20C, 40% humidity) I would have drunk 1.5 ltrs for a similar distance hillier ride.

That's pretty sweet dude.
It's weird how you don't need to have a lot of massive days to feel good on a century. For example, my base ended in january, non of my rides were really over 65 miles for months. Then I did a 110 mile ride a few weeks back and felt great afterwards.

Congrats on the ride, and under 6 hours is a good job.
My first century was 7:30 and that was many years ago. I've done lots of centuries since but I was always younger than you when I did. A century is easier when it is an organized event because there are regular stops and you can get your food and water quick and be back on the bike. I've done centuries and distances beyond on my own but it takes me longer and I usually spend more time at stops.
Of course there are lots of hotdogs that don't think anything about a century unless it is part of a race, but IMO you can be proud of anything 6 hours or less.
