Why did I fall ?
Hello everyone. This is my first post. I've been lurking around for some time now, enjoying all the banter, but now I need some advice. I recently took a bad fall from my touring bike. I was on a paved MUP in dry conditions. I think I may have been out of the saddle, on the hoods, maybe on a slight curve, when my bike just slid out from under me. I cannot understand why. I have a trunk box on the back which may have made the back end a little heavier. I may have hit a bump in the path (there are many tree roots pushing up on the pavement). I may have been pulling up hard on my left hood.
I've taken curves much sharper, and much faster, with heavier loads in my trunk box, with no problem. I guess in those cases, I was coasting.
Anyway, I fell hard onto my right side. Now I have major road rash and a broken collar bone. So I have 2 questions. Has anyone experienced a freak fall like that, and why do you suppose it happened ? How long will it take before I can ride comfortably again with the collar bone? I've already been out around the block at slow speed.
One more comment. My helmet is destroyed. This is my second accident and the second accident in which my helmet has saved my life. Seems that I never have any small accidents.

So you were out of the saddle, grabbing on the hoods? It could be a weight distribution problem, with you putting your balance off of the rear wheel and onto the front while turning, causing your bike to lose control and slide out from under you.
If there was no gravel this is my next best guess.
