Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I haven't heard any more follow up, other than in the link, but it sounds bad. Please pray for John.

Oh my gosh!! That's terrible....... at least they caught the guy. Is John a member here? That is so very sad that someone could get that angry over nothing.

We wer ewith the lead group, and flatted about 2/3rds of the way through the ride. We got back to the parking lot maybe 5 minutes after it happened. I hope the reprt that John's injury was life threatening is over stated. IN talking to people at the scene I didn't get the impression he was gravely injured, so I was very upset to read the news account.

Crazy. Just crazy. I would think a place with a traffic problem like Jacksonville would be nicer to those that help keep one more car off the road.

It appears that he's out of ICU.

I was not around to see what happened, but I can't imagine that the group could have inconveniced anyone for more than a few seconds. The ride starts on the west side of town, and goes out into the countryside. Where the altercation must have occured would have been suburban streets, and there was very little traffic on holiday. The driver actually followe dthe group back oint the parking lot.

Unfathomable, that a perceived inconveinence of witing a few seconds could justify the use of deadly force in some deranged mind.

The comments you see on news reports when there are icidents involving cyclists are outstanding. One can only hope the idiots posting on internet forums are not represntative of our society in general, (of course where does that leave us?)

I ride in florida and it seems to me the guys in the jacked up 4 wheel drives (Rednecks) give me space but the guys in the BMW'S and Benz's want to sideswipe you.

I think John's going to be OK. He's stable and apparently won't need surgery, according to a couple of people who went by Shands to see him.

We had just pulled into the parking lot and a few riders coming in were yelling at a guy in a pickup, and he was yelling back. This was on the feeder road into the parking lot, so not any sort of main street. He pulled into the parking lot, more yelling, and he got out and did the patented redneck chest bump with one of the young guys who was riding with us. People converged and he started fighting with John. I saw what looked like a head butt, but we were still mostly thinking this was just an escalation of another dumbass. Another guy whose name I don't know tried to pull them apart, and the guy jumped into his truck and peeled rubber out of there.

Only at this point did we realize that John had been stabbed, and the other guy was bleeding heavily from a bad slash to his arm. Somebody got the tag number of the truck and another person called 911. One of our riders works in a medical capacity and she helped stabilize the arm wound and we got John on the ground to wait for the paramedics. There wasn't much to be done for him there as he wasn't bleeding heavily and was conscious and breathing.

Cops/paramedics/etc. showed up, John was taken to Shands, and the other rider was able to get up and get into another ambulance. The police strung up crime scene tape, interviewed witnesses, all the regular drill.

Apparently the guy called his father as soon as he left, and his father showed up to talk to the cops. The assailant ended up in the hospital also, probably with a broken nose.

John was stabbed at least 6 times, and one of the wounds hit his lung. Fortunately, he is stable and probably won't need surgery. I expect the other guy is home, albeit with a bunch of stitches. The assailant will be/has been charged with aggravated battery.

Final trivial/surreal note to end this account: When the police strung the crime scene tape, they roped in a couple of our cars and strung the tape from a friend's van. They had to wait for the police to finish investigating the scene before they could leave. My helmet and jersey, taken off when I tried to find something to bandage John with, got impounded by police evidence because they were inside the crime scene tape.

So homeboy stabbed John 6 times, at least one of those times a potentially fatal wound, and the charge is Aggravated Battery ? This does not compute.

Gads. This is why I fled Florida for the relative civility of New Jersey. I still have family in the Jacksonville area, and every time I visit I think about bringing my bike, but then I remember the roads and the traffic and decide to bring running shoes instead.

Hope the wounded cyclists come out ok and the driver gets put away for a long time.

How is stabbing someone in the lung not considered attempted murder? Seriously. I'm dumbfounded by the way laws are interpreted .

Good to hear he survived and is improving. someone with a JD need to explain this: six stabs, one to the lung, and aggravated assault is the charge to be filed? Would a charge of attempted murder stick given the seriousness of the crime?

Opps, looks like my point has already been covered.
