Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Typical Ride, New Pains, Q

I was out today for ~25mi. Was one of the best rides I've had, everything just felt great. Oddly enough my right hand was a little numb near the end of the ride. Typically my left foots outer toes get numb, but a we wiggle/scrunching em up while riding makes it go away. I've never experienced my right hand having this same sensation and I can't really tell what was different about todays ride compared to any other.

Any ideas ??

Numbness is caused by nerve compression. A number of things could have caused it: different position on the bike (if you put more weight on your hands). Or different hand position on the bar. The nerve is thin so a few mm can make the difference between nerve compression or not. Maybe you kept it more on a particular place where the tape (if you have tape) is thicker.

Our memory is not very good at remembering precise body part positions so even if you cannot recall what was different in your body position it doesn't mean there wasn't a difference.

Now, 25 miles is a not a long ride and if you're foot gets numb this quickly, you should check your fit. Google for "cycling foot numbness" and you'll find plenty of references about causes and fixes.

The foot numbness has been an issue when riding a frame last year that I know was way to large for me w/ platform pedals. I have been fitted to my CAAD9-5 when I purchased it in April w/ clipless, even with a dialed in fit I still experience the foot numbness.
