Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best pedals/shoes for duck feet?

So I love having big flat pedals on my LHT but on my racing bike I put big pedals and it is just not doing it for me.

I have good clip pedals for the racing bike but are there shoes that will give me some horizontal movement so my legs aren't forced straight or do I want that?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am by far no expert, but it sounds like you need something with more float. I always want to ride heals in, so what i had to do was align my cleats so that the cleat rode straight, while my feet were able to be in a natural position.

I have heard some people say that speedplay pedals are great because they allow for a lot of horizontal movement, but i have never tried them.

I'd recommend speedplay zero.

Hmm, guess I could fit those on the big flat pedals I have.

Anyone use these and have any thoughts? At least a lot cheaper and if I don't like them not a big investment.

that duck could use a bike fitting.

seriously, you want something with float. lots of pedals have this, so just review popular pedal choices (speedplay zeros, speedplay x series, look keos, time, etc.) to learn which road models offer float and how much. then it comes down to personal preference. i have minor "duckfooted" position and use speedplay zeros. i like them for various reasons, but one is that the float is 0 to 15 degrees and is adjustable for that range. i believe (you can confirm) that there are 7.5 deg. of float around center in each direction (heel out vs. heel in), so i can limit the float that would let me heel out (i.e. more of a pigeon toed position) and increase the float on the heel in position to match the way my feet naturally point.

i have duck feet and use look keos with sidi shoes. I can get enough adjustment to set up the cleats in a duck position with the 4 degree or the 9 degree cleats and also don't rub anywhere with a size 44.

the only problem with frogs are that they're more suitable for pigeon toed individuals.
duck footed should stay away.

you can't go to far on the heel-in side before you start hitting the cranks with your ankle bone.

The gray Look cleats provide 4.5 degrees of float, the red 9 degrees.
