Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Most "bang" for the buck?

Please forgive me...

Consider "performance", future value, "je ne sais quoi", etc., and divide by cost

Why did you put "bang" in quotes? Are you really asking for directions to the cheapest massage parlor in your neighborhood?

Where is Athena 11? That and 6700 are one of the biggest bangs for your buck out there right now.

I chose UItegra... but I find the zero response for DA quite humbling. If what people say about SRAM performance being similar across the board except for weight... then Rival would be the clear winner of value.

It is a flawed poll, but the absence of DI2 is hardly the worst of it.

The forum software limits polls to 10 choices. As there are three major players with three functionally different approaches to the most salient aspect of the problem, viz. shifting, it seemed sensible and fair to select three product classes from each, which were in some sense "comparable". Even if folks have legitimate disagreement with the choices offered, it doesn't really matter, cuz the poll is what it is, a comparison of THOSE choices...

Please, I invite anyone to create similar polls, which bring in the missing product groups, as I think the data even at this early stage are interesting, and because I, like so many others enjoy taking polls, no matter how stupid and meaningless they may be

PS: how many people are even in a position to offer an opinion on DI2 or Apex? Or even (new) Athena?

A trend?

There's not much of a sample at this point, sixty votes.

BUT, I have noticed:

For both SRAM and Shimano, as the cost of the product line increases, perceived "bang for buck" DECREASES.

For the Campagnolo products, as the cost of the product line increases, perceived "bang for buck" INCREASES...

hmmm.

Dude - it's gotta be Sora/2200, which isn't even on your gruppo list.

I ride against competitive road cyclists with zero handicap with a road bike equipped with Sora/2200. Totally perfect shifting, albeit not as "crisp" as ultegra. But I find it hard to justify $650-$800 for mere 'crispness' with no increase in speed whatsoever.

For those who criticize that it'll wear out faster, they might be right, but consider that a Sora cassette sells for about $40 list whereas an ultegra goes for $85, or over double the cost.

It's definitely not blingy, definitely isn't ultralight, and definitely has its own use quirks (not as crisp, thumb-shifter annoying for some), but if you're talking sheer bang for buck, it's beats everything above it hands down.

I voted for Centaur but that was based on 10-speed groups. Forgot that it's all 11-speed now. Which is ridiculous.

Can I change my vote to Rival?

I voted 105 because I can find quite a few new bikes outfitted with 105 that aren't crazy priced and are quality rides. I would have voted Tiagra, but wasn't on the list. I also voted 105 because I like the shape of the shifters.

But in all seriousness the best bang for the buck group is Mavic Mektronic.
