Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recommendations for a craigslist budget?

Would really like to pick up a decent entry levelish road bike after falling in love with the SS I bought about a year ago for my commute to work (~12 mi). I do some longer jaunts on weekends (30-40mi), but would really like to buy a road bike to maybe get into some even longer jaunts.

Unfortunately my pockets are not deep, so I am mostly relegated to used/vintage/Craigslist. Are there any models that are particularly well regarded?

For example, I love the look of old school Peugeots such as this https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hn...771862277.html, but I feel like thats a pretty steep investment that I probably shouldn't make. But would something like https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hn...771169309.html perhaps serve?

Just trying to brainstorm/get ides/recommendations for well regarded used road bikes on the cheap.

That Peugeot is very expensive. I'm not a collector, so I wouldn't spend more than $150 on that bike.

The second deal is pretty good. A bike with brifters for $350 is hard to beat.

When buying on CL, just make sure you're getting something in good shape. Most bikes that are good deals will sell quickly. Never get a bike with rust. Never overpay for a bike... unless your in a rush to get a bike, you can usually find a better deal within the next few weeks if your CL is pretty popular.

If it's up to me, I wouldn't pay more than $200 for downtube shifter bikes... $350 for Sora/Tiagra equipped bikes... $550 for Tiagra equipped bikes. Something like that. There's more to consider than just components though.
