Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yep, Taupo and K2.

My K2 training is going reasonably well - hills followed by more hills. I know it will hurt on race day though

There is also a new 85k race on November 6, two laps of Lake Rotorua. www.bikethelake.com. You even have the opportunity to go for the sprint finish against Stuart O'Grady

So I got a 12-27 cassette last week and took it for a "run-in" ride on Saturday. Should make the last hill on K2 when I am completely shagged that little bit easier Actually it will make ALL the K2 hills easier...

You can't find them for love nor money in the shops right now. I got one off trademe.co.nz from a bloke in Hamilton.

Ultegra - snappy weight saving design, the biggest three cogs are mounted on an aluminium splined holder, unlike the smaller clusters where the larger cogs are just riveted together with all the spacers. It ends up about 20gm lighter than a 12-25 105 cassette.

344 km this past week.

On tonight's club ride we had a nice tail wind heading down the beach, doing 40+kmh and the guy one or two behind me was up out of the saddle getting back on after we turned out of a side street, went through a man hole cover and his bars snapped right at the stem. He bounced a few times, grazed just about everything available and was unconsious for about 30 seconds.

He was pretty dazed for a while, but was able to walk into the ambulance when it arrived, with probably just superficial wounds apart from having his bell rung pretty hard.

The riders following managed to avoid the carnage, some track skills coming in handy for the rider immediately behind, luckily as he is off to the nationals in a couple of days.

And helping restore my faith in youth was that the only two cars that stopped (in quite busy traffic) were occupied by under 25s, one lot offering to transport the guy's bike if necessary, and supplying a blanket to keep the patient warm.

Aahhh yes - the Kiw vs Aussie thread. Mate, I just spent three days trying to drink Seedneey out of VB's before I go on my pre-Taupo detox. We chased these things all over town, there were plenty of em up around the cross as usual, and ahhh - all those luuvly pubs down the rocks. Guess what - it bloody rained - spent Sunday arvo watching the Phillip Island grand prix at the hotel.

Anyway - glad I survived (again) and back in serious training now for 27 Nov. I am also scared by big hills as I think I carry about two full hams-on-the-bone's worth of beer that somehow turned into belly.

I have signed a pact at work where AJ can not eat/drink - Pies, Fries Pizzas, Burgers, Sausage Rolls, Soft Drink or Alcohol for all of November. I think I just about crammed a whole month's worth in the last couple of weeks !!!

Go the Kiwis - AJ

I assumed carbon, but one of the guys that picked his bike up reckoned they were aluminium. The cause of the failure could be anything from over-tightening at the stem, riding style, corrosion, or previous crashes.

Yeah, when I crashed and broke my collarbone earlier this year I called my own ambulance (always ride with the cell phone.) No cars stopped, but another cyclist stopped about 5 minutes after I stacked and waited with me and picked up my bike and bottles.

You have to wonder about people driving past someone lying on the ground (cyclist or not.) It's all very well if it looks like they already have help, but most people don't normally have a lie down next to the road if everything is under control

Geez you guys have a lot of crashes down there, you better get something done about those roads. They didn't look that bad when I was there. I rode over the hill to Rotorua, found it pretty hard going with a headwind. How would that compare with the Taupo ride (recognising that it is only 75 km so 1/2 way).

Yeah the road are bad at the moment mostly due to the heavy truck traffic to the port & wet weather ,cyclings becomeing an eXtreme sport with all the trucks but my big wreck was self induced ,I was riding my old 27"wheel dunger with mudguards & Warehouse tyres to work in the rain & swerved to miss all the $hit in the road & the front wheel washed away on all the wet leaves & berry things blown down by the storm ,the longer wheelbase & spongy tyres didnt work the same as the 700X23s
The council useualy start to fix all the potholes just before Xmass ,just in time for the tourist season ! The other problem is the Friday & Saterday night wild eyed bottle throwers

The Pye's Pa road to Rotorua is good to ride at the moment as it's closed to traffic through the gorge due to road re-aligning & has only local traffic using it ,I like to ride up as far as the school then turn back & do a fast down hill back to town , I used to include a loop through Joyce Road but I've been to scared to tackle it since I had my crash ,I dont think my hip is healed enough for that yet

I've been riding up that way too. Joyce Rd still has a short (50m) section unsealed after they did some work on the bridge in the gully at the town end of it, although you can just coast through it. And that short hill is a b%gger to climb!

In fact you've prompted me to go riding that way this arvo. I'll see if I can get out to the roadworks inside an hour.

You certainly need to stick within your limits while you are recovering from a big stack like you had. I do believe that activity really helps build bone strength after a fracture, so you're doing all the right things.

Hav'nt been on Joyce Rd since Jan ,must have been the cyclone a coupla months ago washed out the road , I saw the road is all messed up where that woman was killed by a falling tree on the Pyes Rd. Oripi Road is another good climb to the end of the tarmac. a bit harder than Pyes Pa ??
