Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey John,

When you get some cleats for those road shoes, you need to get a road version of SPD cleats. They have rubber pontoon thingies so you can walk on them. I noticed that on Sunday where a couple of the bunch riders are using SPDs for their road bikes.

I can't find any online in NZ though. Shops will be able to get them though.

NO... its not cool... Its cold. But anyway i got to sprint against Hayley today. We did a time trail at the track at New Lynn. We had five people in each team. As we did a lap the first person would drop off completely. Hayley and I were the two who were left. Hayley had the faster team so I had catch her up. Not by much about 10 seconds. But I did so im proud.... but at the end of the sprint I think I wanted to yell at our coach. Weve got our next water front team time trail this weekend. Last race we had it was really foggy. Best thing off all tomorrow we get our brand new cycling uniforms. Track suits as well. Fun fun.

Cycling is great, roads are rough chip & drivers hate cyclists, but aside from that it's all good. Just remember its winter here though, and the country is in the middle of a British, Irish, Scots & Wales invasion, they are currently storming up the North Island in a fleet of white camper-vans. We have repelled them so far, and expect to win the final battle this weekend. After that, the roads should be safe(r) again.

look out indeed... lol
i wasnt going to put anything (considering this is a kiwi thread )
but we have had to deal with crappy unfounded selections, and strict regulations that prevent the team from mixing and were thrown together and expected to perform. I think far far too much money had been poured into this tour which could be used far better back home in building better sports facilities which are pretty few and far between (unless you play soccer).

anyhoo

What footwear do you use for commuting in the rain like we've been having recently? Booties, waterproof socks? Just wondering (haven't tried commuting in the wet yet). Do they keep you dry?

I wear neoprene booties, but they only keep you dry in heavy rain until enough rain and spray has run down your legs to soak your socks, then all they do is help keep your feet a bit warmer.

I had some windtex booties before that worked better, but I munted them in a crash and replaced them with the neoprene ones.

I believe that the Pearl Izumi rain booties work pretty well as you can tighten the ankle fastening up to slow down the trickle into your shoes.

How long does that take? My commute only takes 30 minutes so maybe it will last?

It can be pretty quick if it is raining hard enough. The tighter the booties fit round your ankles, the less water you will get down your socks.

Hey AJ, I just worked out that I sold you my old Avanti Sprint last year, and the dude you sold it to now has it for sale on Trademe. That'll be four times through Trademe for that bike (that I know of.) Mind you there's not so much of the original bike left now.

My embarrassing story for the week is a less than graceful but painless fall last night in heavy traffic. A truck was blocking the lane coming up to a roundabout and I couldn't unclip in time so I just had to fall off onto the grass verge. Then I couldn't unclip for about 20 seconds and had a passenger in the car I was next to ask me if I was alright. They must have though I was a **** the way I was cursing to myself and flicking my legs to unclip.

It was probably instant karma for feeling superior after passing about 100 cars in the queue

Yo wassup homies? da mad mAnIaC is bak!

heheh anyway, how is everyone? I've been very lazy this year, but I've started doing some MTB and I'm about to hit the road again for summer training - going to do the mass participation races like K1 and round taupo.

Ok, I've already run out of things to say.

Peace Out.

I kinda crashed at swanson roundabout a couple of weeks ago. My left foot uncliped and I ended up running in the kurb(sp?). I wasnt hurt but my chain did come off. I had my school uniform on so i didnt want to touch it. After about 20 mins a dude from my form class came riding up on his bike and was like "do you need some help" and then he put my chain back on. He got his hands covered in grease... I thanked him and went home.

Has anyone noticed how cold it has been in the morning lately. It would be just right for a scarf!!! *cough*sam*cough*

Well it isn't my fault that you left it in my bag. Oh and about the chain grease on her uniform people, it's ok, I took her for a bit of a tramp and got her shoes and jeans absolutely coated in mud, so I guess she got even in the end.

I took the MTB into the hills for a few hours today and halfway into the ride it began to pelt it down turning what was lovely (ish) singletrack into a quagmire of brown slop, needless to say i seemed to become some sort of human magnet for the stuff and 3/4 hr later probably frightened the life out of two poor kids in the car park when i emerged from the end of the trail. I then had to make my way home at mass work exodus time so there were cars EVERYWHERE i only had to go a short stretch on the main road but i must have had 20 cars go past in both directions, one womans face was an absolute crack up as she came towards me of course by then it had brightnened up so my new 'skin' was especially noticeable..lol FUN THOUGH!!

Hey I missed this altogether - was that you down St Heliers way then ??? I didn't have that bike for very long, probably 6 months. I had a knarly wipe-out in Newmarket after some deek head spilled diesel all the way down broadway, no damage (well not much) to the bike but I still have the scars. I just got the bug & bought myself that Cannondale. The guy I sold it to did Taupo on it. Now that you've pointed it out, I will think about buying it back for a rain bike.
