How hilly is around taupo bike race? Is it worse than IMNZ? Could you compare the worst hills against ones in the cbd? Such as top of queen, or anzac up to top of symonds? Currently the lowest gear I have is a 42x23 and I'm kind of wondering if that is low enough for the enduro.

You should think about at least a 39x25 unless you are an A grader who flies up hills.
IMNZ only has some rolling hills as I try to recall the Broadlands road. Taupo is all rolling hills for the first 1/3, then you have Waihaha and Kuratau Hill in the next 1/3 and finally Hatape Hill 20k from the finish.
If you know any of the South Auckland Hills, Waihaha and Kuratau are a bit like Twilight only longer, and Hatepe is about the same as Sandstone from the Whitford side.
There are course maps and profiles at https://www.cyclechallenge.org.nz/maps.asp

Looked at those course maps, but when you are unfamliar with gradients etc.. and have nothing to compare them to it is kind of tricky. Did live in south auckland for nearly my entire life but never really went out cycling there much (was a runner). Oh well. At least like thought my gearing is too high, I'm not an A grader and a struggle up hills a lot!

You would have missed that incredible wipe-out right after the start on the first straight, where a guy doing 45km took out a roadside warning sign. Not sure what made him veer left of the bunch, but he wouldn't have seen it coming - WHAM. I felt his pain, but kept riding as there were marshalls there to sort him out & call an ambulance. We had a couple of decent wipe-outs on the luge afterward, and came back sunburnt. Taupo is going to be another looong day for me this year.

I heard about that one later on. There was a case for putting the signs up on the footpath if there ever was one. And the cones could have done with being closer together as well.
I was waiting for someone to go ass over tit on one of the road cones on that first bit of road. One dude just near me missed one by a bees doodle trying to jump up the bunch, and it's not like he hadn't ridden past about 20 of them already.
Then someone caught my back wheel and went down at the roundabout going back out onto Te Ngae Rd as the bunch slowed. Luckily at low speed so it just caused a massive traffic jam.
The starts are the part I hate with rides like that, you just have to protect your own space until it settles down.

yeah ummmm theres a $1200 bike in the Hunua Ranges! Finders Keepers... Therefore I am leading the hunting expedition! We went in Yesterday and we now know what ridge it is on (yes I carried my bike uphill through dense bush in search of another trail, before getting disorientated and discouraged and dumping it in favour of my life!) because I positively IDd the creek that I carried it up.

I have an OCR Zero 06, compact crank 36x50, 12-23 cassette.
I'm going round Taupo and I am considering changing the cassette to either a 12-25 or 12-27, to help with the hills.
The other question is do I need to at all?
I have only been cycling for 4 months and my long ride is 100kms which I have completed twice so far with another one this week. Average speed 23.5 km/hr, not including stops and solo, no drafting.
Hills are obviously hard, but it's the length of the gradients I'm worried about!
Any thoughts?
Des.
