Ruptured my achilles playing basketball...that sucked, but not as bad as some of the stories on this thread. Pedaling well now though!

About a year ago I was diagnosed with rectal cancer. Now it looks like I'm cured. Got a CT scan and a colonoscopy later this week to confirm that.
The bike was my salvation during treatment and helped me recovery from 2 surgeries. I put 1,000 miles on the bike through 5 weeks of combined chemo/radiation treatments, even though my doctors said riding a bike would be impossible. I started riding again 6 weeks after my major surgery and put another 1,000 miles on from then until the end of chemo, which ended just before last Christmas. I'm about 1,300 miles into the year and getting stronger with every ride.
If you read up on colorectal cancer, you will notice that regular exercise is one of the major factors in preventing a recurrence, which is the one thing all cancer survivors dread. That's all the motivation I need to keep riding.....forever.

No it's not, it's inspirational!! Every one of the people here ride bikes! And none of these illnesses/incidents are getting in the way of that. This is an AWESOME thread!

3 fusions in my neck, 6 shoulder surgeries, including a total replacement in January, 4 sinus surgeries, some minor brain surgery, and my appendix out. Ironically, asthma bothers me riding a lot worse than any of the rest.

Hmm...separated shoulder x2, broken ankle as a HS senior 6 weeks before a planned trip for college football tryouts (so much for that), three herniated discs in my c-spine, three more in my t-spine, pulmonary sarcoidosis (currently not active), HTN since I was a kid, torn ligaments in my foot, staph infection in my big toe last year (that sucked more so than one might think).
The sickest I've ever been...came down with the flu on Election Day 2008, a few days later developed pneumonia. My doctor wanted me on Levaquin, my hmo refused to cover it, and the pharmacy got my doctor to change it to Cipro without even giving me the opportunity to pay out of pocket. So I stayed sick. Wished I was dead, cuz sometimes, dead is better.

Got hit by a car in April and shattered nearly every bone in my face between my jaw and eyebrows. Had my jaw wired shut for 3 weeks and have had 3 surgeries since and at least 2 more scheduled not counting the cosmetic stuff they will need to do. Just had a reconstruction surgery last week where they took a bone graft from my hip to fix the floor of my eye socket. Hopefully will be back to work and riding in about a month they said. Ive got some kick ass surgeons!

One reason I bike is that I was born with a right arch that won't flex and has a bone sticking out the bottom. No cancer, but seven operations to remove tumors from larynx. First tumor almost killed me before it was diagnosed and I almost died in the seventh operation due to some bizarre circumstances. Asthma attacks before effective medication made me feel each breath might be my last - taught me to stay cool under pressure and probably accounts for my oversized heart and cardioid arteries. Brain tumor was knocked out with radiation in 2005 but destroyed my left balance and hearing nerves. I was also left with impaired short term memory which cause my early retirement which gives me MUCH more time to bike. Unfortunately, lack of balance keeps me off narrow and uneven trails.

Thanks! I'm stage 2a, but as you know, there's no guarantees w/this disease. Stage 3s get a boatload of chemo (I only had four rounds of Xelox post-op), so major props to you on that. Chemo was not my favorite part of getting cancer. Five years is a significant milestone. Congratulations on that, fo sho.

Dudes.. I don't know where to begin...
3 months - 1st bout with cancer - Wilms Tumor - Removal of full left kidney
1 year - 2nd bout of cancer - Wilms Tumor again - Died for a couple seconds - 1/2 to 3/4 of right kidney taken out. I also contacted Bronchial Pneumonia then.. it's great during the wintertime
1-3 years old - 3 surgeries to correct a Hypospadius (sp?)
8 years old - Cyst on testicle - testicle removed
19 Years old - Broken Jaw from a suckerpunch
24 years old - 2 strokes - the first in Aug of 2001 and the 2nd in Feb 2002
30 years old - 1/2 to 1/4 kidney ****s down due to the Flu. I start on Dialysis (on for 5 weeks and back to normal) Gets put on Kidney transplant list.
31 Years old - AV Fistula placed in my left arm for possible dialysis plans due to me needing a transplant soon
32 Years old - I finally get my long awaited kidney in Jan 2010!!
Now I'm 33 (even though I don't look it at all) and I'm still rocking out.. Even though I still have a bunch of nodules on my other testicle that are benign.

Type V shoulder separation (all 3 tendons) - my surgeon tied everything back together with latex tubing. It's still in there.
At the same time, my shoulder blade was shattered, broke 5 ribs and punctured my lung, which filled with fluid.
This was from a mountain biking mishap incorporating speed & air...
before I had gained all my mad skillz.

Two decent ones.
A botched appendectomy that required multiple, anesthesia free followup "cleanings" of the inside of the subcutaneous fat against my abdominal wall for about 4-5 inches in a circular radius around my belly button with long wooden dental swabs. The wound then herniated and had to be cauterized. I got back into racing afterward though.
The second was much more recent. Two grade III ligament tears, one more probable grade III tear, a partially torn tendon, torn/ruptured joint capsule, and a syndesmosis tear in my right ankle. Went undiagnosed and untreated for 3 months, they just thought it was a bad sprain. That was in december, and they told me to expect a year for full recovery. I am about 90% recovered and have started running again. I also put out a 328W 20 minute effort on the bike today. Healed enough for me.
Congrats to all the posters that have beat more serious ailments, especially the cancer survivors. Godspeed to those still fighting the good fight.

Nothing cycling related but
3 concussions- Hockey
1 broken collar bone - Hockey
1 broken foot - Skateboarding
1 broken Wrist - snowboarding
a few broken fingers and hockey related sprains and pulls.
all healed mostly fine, I have some pain and cracking in the wrist. Sometimes when I'm in the drops, and a lot when im playing drums. And a little pain in the collar bone with the weather. but for the most part I cant complain.

Thanks! The surgery consisted of re-routing the nerves to her bladder etc, cutting through her back muscles according to the doc. So when I think of the pain I felt separating my shoulder and scraping my knee on the MTB crash last month,....I need to quit crying and HTFU like she did!

Wow, bone transplant - glad to hear you're on the mend!
I recovered from being hit by a SUV that ran a stop sign and smashed into my right side, pretty much making my right leg below the knee mush. 3 surgeries, 18" rod down the center of the leg, 6"plate on the shin, 10+ screws, bone graft, etc, etc. Took about 9+ months to walk again.

Ok guys, it's bragging time.
What sort of major ailments have you all overcame? Im talking big things here. No colds, flus, scrapes or anything like that. Im talking about cancer, hip replacements, broken femurs, comas, etc.
I had a Bone Marrow Transplant a little while back. Don't think it affected my cycling too bad.

Ah man - that makes me twinge thinking about it. Glad to hear you're doing better!
Not nearly as bad as the rest but painful none the less. I had a dental abcess, a tooth died and got infected and the infection ate a hole the size of a quarter in my jawbone. After two root canals, and a surgery the decision was made to remove the tooth, which is the next tooth over from the front tooth, I had a bone graft and was toothless for about a year. Which is a lot better than the pressure I was dealing with from the infection eating away my jawbone. So they finally put a titanium screw in there and affixed a permanent crown and I have been doing great ever since.
