Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trying to put together a trainer wheel

so excuse me for being an idiot but as long as its 700c it should be fine right? And compatible with shimano obviously...What should I search for on ebay to find something decent? Anything wrong with something like this:

strike one: looks like someone relaced the rims incorrectly and cut new notches into the hub.
strike two: looks like aluminum nipples are used, and alu nipples are simply no good for longevity.

but other than those two, it looks like a good deal.

Meh, you can overlook a lot for a "trainer" wheel... I assume that means it will only be used on a stationary trainer.

Anyway, it's also important that the rear spacing is correct. I assume your bike is 130mm, and it looks like this one is as well. Before you decide how much it's worth bidding on, remember you can get a brand new Forte Titan rear wheel from performance for $90, sometimes less if you find the right sale or coupon.

by "trainer wheel" - do you mean used on a trainer, or used for training (on the road)?

sorry, it will be used only on my KK trainer, it won't see the road. I'm planning on putting on some type of tire made specifically for the trainer.

What are your current wheels? This could be a nice opportunity to bump those to trainer use and upgrade to something better if the funds allow.

I think they're shimano wh-rs10's, nothing great but I don't have the cash to drop on new wheels. I wish I did, but I'm thinking next year I might be able to upgrade to something with a powertap, we'll see. Thanks guys

Maybe wait until then. It's almost Summer, you shouldn't be restricted to the trainer much anyway, right?

Mavic Reflex rims are for tubular tires, not suitable for use on a trainer

Incorrect. If you had read the questions section of the auction, you'd have noticed these are Reflex clinchers, which were made in the mid 90's. Not sure why Mavic later made a tubular by the same name, but it has made for some confusion.

Well the new wheels aren't guaranteed, it's just an idea. I use the trainer a decent amount even now. I usually do an interval workout about once a week, and maybe an easy spin if it's raining out. The tires on the bike now are trash so I don't mind using them on the trainer too. Once I replace them though I'd like to have a separate trainer wheel, Thanks guys

I'll probably go with those titans but I'm heading over to my local shop tomorrow, I'll see if they have anything lying around
