Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Campy Athena on a Jamis Aurora, any problems?

I have a 2000 Jamis Aurora, originally came with Sora components with canti brakes. It has been a good bike for me and the frame fits me quite well, but the components are showing their age, the front shifter is not working properly and the rear derailure has been bent, time to replace the chainrings on the crank too. I am contemplating changing the shifters, derailures, crank, cassette, bottom braket to Campagnolo Athena stuff. Can anybody think of any technical reason why I wouldn't be able to do this. I will be going from a triple crank to a compact double, mostly because I never use the smaller ring on the triple anyway. My goal for this bike is to be my rainy day ride or for riding trails like the Katy trail.

I am also looking for a new set of wheels, the ones that I am using are the stock ones now but I would like to get a set that are good for me and about 25-30 lbs of gear. Basically, I want the wheels to be strong and be a little lighter than the stock ones. Any recommendations?

You shouldn't have any problems.

Mavic Open Pro rims with Shimano Ultegra hubs and DT Swiss spokes make a really good wheelset that's pretty much "bombproof" You'll have to get a rear wheel that is Campagnolo compatible.

You can get a 12-29 campy 11 cassette too if you want more climbing power.

Thanks for the recommendations. I was thinking along the lines of a 12-29 cassette since I am doing away with the triple. More climbing power can't hurt, right?
