Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bad Day

My ride started off normal. I was headed to the trail to do some intervals without being interrupted. It was in the middle of rush hour and I was stopped at a light. Already I'm the center of everyone's attention. As the light turns green I clip in, or so I thought, unfortunately I wasn't and the family jewels got the chance to meet my top tube. Luckily it was rush hour and everyone at the light got to point and laugh:. So with what dignity I had left I pulled into a nearby plaza.

That's not all...

So after I collected myself I went around the buildings to get to the exit as I was turning, Bam! I hit a huge pothole. My water bottle was rattled out of the cage and I ran over it with my back wheel and barely saved myself from falling. Not only that but all the water spilled out AND of course, got 2 pinch flats, of course only had 1 tube(HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE).

I fixed the back wheel and just left the front flat. With all my dignity gone, my bike and I limped home. At least I get to eat some Ramen Noodles now!

Sorry, I had to rant...

it's possible because you only brought one tube with you....right?
so you rode home on the rim? that never works out so good.

Wasn't that far and I'm about 135. The rim will be fine...Hopefully.
I meant the 2 flats, when I said how is that even possible.

oh yea. it's possible . but you know that now. soooo, carry 2 tubes and a patch kit. there was just a thread about packing a ton of crap into a saddle bag if you need help with that.

and about the wheel. i'm 165, sure it's 30 lbs heavier then you, but i messed up a strong wheel while riding on the rim. at the time i did not care as i just wanted to get home, but it ended up costing me to get it repaired. so bring those tubes!

I got two flats on my commute last Friday. Slow leaks, had to walk about a mile to work. I always carry a 6 pack of Slime Skabs and two tubes, as well as a floor pump at work. Sorry about your day, it will get better.

Ramen rules.

Thats not that bad...I left the driveway this evening to go meet up for a local group ride, and 100 feet later I snapped a spoke. So no ride for me, and I wont have the bike back until Wednesday at the earliest

Bah, no injury or public scorn involved. So, OP still wins the Bad Day award here.

this of course proves, that if you want to ride seriously, a back-up bike, or at a bare minimum, back-up wheels are an absolute necessity.

this is especially true if your the "bring it to the lbs" type. this time of year they are so busy that you can lose a ton of time without your bike.

man up kid, spend some $$.

a decent set of serviceable back-up wheels can be had for under $200. how much is the shop charging you to replace a spoke?

I carry a tube a co2, and a cell phone. If I encounter anything worse than 1 flat, I call for extraction.

Have only had to go to Plan B (aka 'extraction') once but it was awfully nice...

Yeah, I had to call the "sag wagon" once for a mechanical. I had sliced a tire. It was not a road-side repair.

I've done it one other time for a bonk. Shame on me, but it was nice to have the option.
